Ok ok, I'm in for one. I can finally stop looking at receivers. I wish everybody luck on the rest of their journey.

Seems like the dacs in this receiver are subpar, preouts or not you are stuck with the inferior performance especially after buying a dirac license. From the audiosciencereview: "Conclusions
I had high hopes going into this review thinking the company had seen the advantage its superior objective measurements in the past and would try to capitalize on them. Sadly, the reverse seems to be true with the DAC section taking a large step backward. Considering that the 3800 costs $500 more than 3700H, this is very surprising to me. Yes, inflation has a lot to do with that but surely the eye needed to be focused on making sure they at least met the same level of performance as last generation.

The good news is that the amplifier seems to be same design as last generation and has only taken a small hit.

Denon had been my "goto" recommendation for AVRs and even AVPs. When anyone asked me about either, I would just say "get a Denon AVR." While subjectively the performance of this new generation may be similar, I can't accept the regression in objective measured performance.

It is with much sadness that I cannot recommend the Denon AVR-X3800H. "
Lol. It's fine. That guy is hung up on "numbers". This avr gets 5 star reviews from everyone who "listens" to it. 99.9% of the public can't tell a good DAC from a great DAC. Get a different device if you have golden ears ✌🏼

Well pretty well known/discussed IF those "measurements" are even an audible difference is a BIG question mark, most believe they're not.

I know I've auditioned countless receivers and couldn't point them out, isn't that the whole point of listening/auditioning after all!

Keep in mind the 3800,4800 & 6700 share the same DAC.

If expanding to 7.1.4 then you would need the receiver to process 12 channels. It would require a receiver like this plus an external amplifier for at least 2 channels. You can send the audio to the receiver if you don't need to video to passthrough it, but with a receiver like this it would make more sense to cable everything from your media player through the receiver and then to the projector.
Thank you

The reviewer (or it could have been a senior member) says in one of the gazillion replies that he doubts whether the average listener could tell a difference BUT the numbers are indicative of the quality of the design and fabrication.

I would argue no one can, including the reviewers.
Now if they came up with those conclusions strictly by listening, now those numbers have much more validity but no one does.

People have been trying to correlate how something is designed/built/fabricated to how it will sound to everyone since the dawn of time!
It's a fallacy and the proof has always been right in front of everyone's faces!

Those numbers are there to read and people often do,yet they still come in here and ask how does something compare or better.
Opposing sides chime in and the common debates rages on.
When people actually do listen and compare, often times they find they prefer(choose) the sound that numbers said was subpar!
Even the ones that argue for the correlation try to prove it with blind listening test and results are always an average!

You then bring in the worth of these differences, the topic becomes exponentially much more complicated!

I'm so torn. This 3800 + DIRAC deal or splurge on Onkyo RZ70? I'm going for a 5.2.4 Atmos setup so I'll need to upgrade my 7.2 receiver but wondering if I should future proof while I'm at it. My floor standing speakers are rated for up to 200W @ 6ohms.

i'm asking myself the same thing... my current receiver (Yammy RXV581) I bought 'only' 5 years ago... previous to that one lasted almost 15 years (Yammy HTR5790)... feels strange to replace the 581 so soon, but the Xbox Series X doesn't like connecting to it and then to the Sony TV without losing dolby vision... Also, I currently have a 7.1 set up and likely can't (spouse-asthetics-wise) move to 5.1.4.

first world problems. what's holding you back?

I have a Denon 25000H with the following set-up. Will I see any significant improvement from upgrading my receiver?

- KEF Q350s L / R
- KEF Q650 Center
- KEF Q150 Surrounds
- SVS PB12-NSD Subwoofer

Contrary to popular belief speaker quality affects sound quality more than a AVR.

If that's not an issue and you have no brand preference.

The RZ70 might be a better future proof option.
Less likely to need external power, Dirac Live is included in the base price and you get DLBC option.

The only future proof you may lose out on is possibly D-ART.
Speculation is a requirement is 4 independent sub outs, the RZ70 has 2 and other 2 are parallel/mono.

Wish more people would understand this. Getting tired of "Just bought a X3800h, recommend me some speakers"

What is the issue you are having with the 2500h that makes you want to change receivers?
With a 5.1 setup why are looking at a 9.4 receiver?
