How is this better than any smart phone with dozens of applications that do the same thing?

You can tune in a room full of people who are also tuning and making a racket. Can't do that with an app requiring a mic. If you're playing a gig on stage, you can't stop the show and tell everyone to wait while you pull out your phone and start up your app and tune....

The headstock tuners use a piezo sensor to pick up the pitch from the instrument vibrations. It's not nearly as bothered by noise in the room as a phone mic is and it's usually far more accurate. (Phone mics aren't calibrated.) The headstock tuners aren't as good as pedal tuners that work off the signal from the guitar, but they're a LOT better than the phone app. If performing live, a phone app is useless, while a pedal tuner or headstock tuner mounted behind the headstock makes it easy to tune the instrument without any drama at all.

I use a phone app myself from time to time (the Boss TU-looking one is great), but the headstock tuner gives better results. Personally, I think one of the D'Addario Micro tuners are better than this one, mostly because the head of the tuner can't break off so easily. Or get a rechargeable one and dispense with batteries. However, this one should work fine for basic purposes.
