Tried a few of these tiny machines and they all break or barely work.

We run ours year round and they last about 2 years. None have been this brand, but they all seem to be the same thing, just rebranded.

Our current one won't die just yet, it's a fighter, but it's starting to make noise, will make ice regardless of water level (it makes tiny contact lens size ice if low), and the lid falls off lol.

Even though it works, this is a good enough price to keep it as a backup until the other one finally stops working.

Our fridge has the ability to make ice, but we prefer these ice machines because we can easily use water that's gone through our Berkey filter first. ✌️

I actively avoid them, they are the first thing to break. I do not need the headache. Service call is twice what type thing costs. Goes on a mini fridge and you still come out on top.

True
Mine went out after the warranty expired. It makes ice but does not dispense ice.

Anyway,
This seems to have better reviews:

So if you do want a refrigerator with an ice maker it probably needs to be one that doesn't dispense ice through the door but just drops into a bin in the freezer. Still you are best off avoiding having water and ice makers in your refrigerator completely if you want to maximize longevity. Compressors and what not are expensive.
I feel the opposite...

The issue with the tray in the freezer is that one, it holds too much ice. And two it is susceptible to the defrost cycle. Therefore you end up with old ice that has thawed and refrozen with all the smells/tastes of your food. Nothing worse than attempting to sip on good scotch and your ice is gross.

I have a french door fridge with the dispenser in the top corner of fridge section and I like that it is smaller (fresher, quicker turn around ice) and is self enclosed, not exposed to other food, etc. Much fresher, cleaner ice.

Do they fail? Absolutely. I just replaced it for the 2nd time in the past year (so 3rd ice maker since owning the 9 year old fridge). But the ice maker is a little over $100 on Amazon and takes me all of 10 minutes to replace. Pick your poison, I'm sure one of these would fail every 4 years or so if I had it making ice 24/7 like my built in ice maker.

Is buying the insurance/warranty worth it? I live in Maine and know previously the insurances offered online didn't apply to us. I can't find any info in the details though.

If the ice maker is in the door or refrigerator section it isn't about the actual ice making device. It is about the refrigerator separating an ice section from the refrigerator section. It makes the condenser and everything else run double time. It puts the stress on the parts that are the most expensive. These aren't just my opinions but are the opinions of all of the Repair men that fix these for a living. Some of them demonstrating and talking about it on YouTube.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned this, but in areas of hard water (I'm looking at you, SoCal), the refrigerator ice maker makes very cloudy, sometimes smelly ice. I use DISTILLED water in my little countertop ice maker, and now I'm known around the condo complex as the guy with the beautiful ice.

Seriously, get one of these and use distilled water and you'll thank me later. The look of clear ice in an old fashioned just adds to the enjoyment.

Interesting. I bought this today, and the instructions clearly say "do not use distilled water."

My fridge's icemaker broke about 3 yrs after I bought it. Too expensive to fix, 1st the ice maker broke, then the intake valve stopped letting water in and at some point the ice basket cracked down the middle. Would all cost almost as much as what I paid for the fridge to fix. Been using one of these for 3 yrs with the last year running it 24/7 till it died. I just bought one about a month that looks identical to this one but rebranded for $75 so this is a good price. Am very happy with it. Actually makes ice faster than the last one.If I get 3 yrs out of it I'll be happy.

Does this keep ice frozen too?
It does not keep the ice frozen, There is a small basket where ice drops into. It will eventually start to melt if you don't use it. I run mine most of the time 24/7. Ice will fill the basket and machine will stop making ice as there is a sensor that detects when basket is full. Ice will melt which clears the sensor and it will start making ice again till process repeats. I do sometimes shut it off if I know I won't be drawing ice for awhile but if you leave it off for more than a day you should drain the water and dry it thoroughly as it will develop mold if you leave it wet in a warm environment.

I've considered one like this model. One that makes square ice, I think more like a fridge ice maker. Ktaxon 110lbs/24h Stainless Steel Commercial Freestanding Ice Maker Machine, Gray https://www.walmart.com/ip/989325774

Anyone else try one like this
Problem with ice makers is that they are not refrigerators. If you don't use the ice it will melt down. 110lbs/24 hrs is a lot of ice. Are you planning to use that much per day or thinking you can just run it for awhile to make ice and shut it down and the ice will be there when you need i? If you go that route then you have to drain it and thoroughly dry it as it will develop mold if you leave the water in there in a warm environment.

Care to explain? Is it better to buy in cash in person over online & shipped for returns?
People who abuse return policy and ruin it for others. Many many retailers use to have lifetime warranty/returns...but no more

If you can get 2yr, you are lucky. Most of them broke between 1-2 yr.

Run DISTILLED Water only through these ice makers wont break down ! The heavy minerals in water will build up on the ice maker parts, but Distilled should last twice as long. I was going through ice makers 1 to 2 years, before getting the tip to use DISTILLED to fill maker with only.

You could route your water line to a direct line from a 5 stage filter instead, for most refrigerators. This is how we set it up, that way you avoid the overpriced (and inefficient) internal filter. You end up with better tasting water as well from the 5 stage RO. Only hassle is running the line from the filter to the fridge (had to go through cabinets in my case). But well worth it in the long run.
I did this and installed a bypass filter in my fridge after installing the RO system in my basement. Ice maker worked great for about 2-3 months producing beautiful ice. I went out of town for a while and dumped the whole tray because it was getting pretty solid and now it won't produce a single ice cube. Really frustrating. I need to troubleshoot and diagnose now but from what I've read it's due to low water pressure and the lines basically freezing up.

I think I need to install a booster pump on my RO water system and maybe even upgrade the 2gal storage tank or run another one in series.

Do you have a booster pump on yours?
