For mechanical work, you'd ideally want at least 10 gallons (and bigger is better) with at least 4CFM of airflow (with more better).

With that said, there are electric impacts now that take a lot of the duty away from the compressor. A pancake compressor of this size will easily power a framing nailer to build a garage or fence. With some patience you can even run a few high air demand tools. The downside is you will have to wait for it to recover, so you can only work a few seconds at a time at high airflow.

I have this compressor. It's a great start for a DIYer. I started with worse using some no name that came with a nail gun.

I recommend you get electric tools where it makes sense if you don't want a massive shop compressor.

Here's a chart that shows you the CFM needed to run various pneumatic tools at 25% duty cycle:

I've never had a compressor nor used one. What's a good gallon size for a DIY'er? I do light mechanic work on vehicle and and would like to use air gun and sorts.

This is great size for home and diy. I have it and use it around the house often. The tank seems small when opening the box but the compressor refills so fast that the compact size does not feel like a sacrifice.

I bought a table saw from them. The "blemished" products are pretty much brand new.
Do NOT get "reconditioned" stuff from them. Too many horror stories.

This is a great little compressor. I've used with framing and trim nailers and just to air up kids bikes. Seems slightly louder than my Porter Cable pancake compressor was but the connections are much easier to get air hose on.

It's the manufacturer's site where they ditch overstock and referbs.

It has a "RIDGID 3-Year Limited Warranty". No Lifetime Service Agreement (which is the primary reason I buy Ridgid). I'm out!

I live near one of their outlets. I've had no problem, I've even bought this exact compressor from them. Works great, shipping didn't take long.

not this, this compressor is more for air nailers. if you want to run an impact and air hammer you want a minimum of 5cfm @ 90psi 24-32 gallon @ 110v or if you have the space run a 220v 60 gallon

worth noting that for $199 you can get the kit with a finish nailer. brad nailer and crown staple nailer. reasonably sure the finish nailer in the kit is the same one on the shelf for 169, they look identical
