I'm not going to mince words. Intel Celeron CPUs suck. Intel (and AMD for that matter) has never done very low power CPUs well. ARM-based CPUs are more power efficient than x86 CPUs, which is why ARM dominates the mobile phone market. No x86 emulation required for smartphones running iOS or Android, just as no x86 emulation is required for MediaTek and Snapdragon CPUs running Chrome OS.

At $149, this SD listing is for a budget Chromebook. This isn't a gaming rig, nor is it a hardcore creative DTR. It's a laptop for very basic, entry level use -- the MediaTek Kompanio 520 can definitely compete in this space.

Synthetic benchmarks like Passmark aren't everything, but they at least provide a reasonable basis for comparison between different CPUs and architectures. YMMV in real world use.

Mediatek Kompanio 520 (2 primary cores, 2 threads; 6 secondary cores, 6 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1453, multi thread 3949 (17 samples, medium margin of error). Typical TDP per Passmark is 4 watts.

Below is a list of Celeron CPUs powering Chromebooks for sale at Best Buy. Note that I'm not trying to compare apples to apples from an overall Chromebook / price perspective. I'm just looking at various Celeron CPUs and their respective Passmark scores as compared with the MediaTek Kompanio 520.

Celeron n4120 (4 cores, 4 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1097, multi thread 2528 (244 samples, low margin of error). Typical TDP per Passmark is 6 watts.

Celeron n4020 (2 cores, 2 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1151, multi thread 1556 (697 samples, low margin of error). Typical TDP per Passmark is 6 watts.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer...Id=6565419

Celeron n4000 (2 cores, 2 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1034, multi thread 1417 (741 samples, low margin of error). Typical TDP per Passmark is 6 watts.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sams...Id=6503860

Celeron n4500 (2 cores, 2 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1390, multi thread 1998 (148 samples, low margin of error). Typical TDP per Passmark is 6 watts.

Target had this on sale during early November. I could not remember the price at that time.
Other than the Target's deal, it seems like $149.99 is the lowest so far.

The positive things about this is long battery life with touch screen.
The downside is the CPU is not strong
MediaTek Kompanio 520 has benchmark of 3949
(for example, for comparison, int i3 11gen from 2021 has a benchmark of 6133)

But for $149.99, it is a reasonable deal for light browsing.

Note the difference in Typical TDP (per Passmark) between the newer Mediatek Kompanio 520 and the Snapdragon 7c.

Mediatek Kompanio 520 (2 primary cores, 2 threads; 6 secondary cores, 6 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1453, multi thread 3949 (17 samples, medium margin of error). Typical TDP per Passmark is 4 watts.

Snapdragon 7c (2 primary cores, 2 threads; 6 secondary cores, 6 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1212, multi thread 3315 (15 samples, medium margin of error). Typical TDP per Passmark 9 is watts. Specs are for the original version, *not* Gen 2.

And just for laughs, the A10-4600M (35 watts) powering my venerable HP ProBook 6475b from 2013, which I still use on occasion to stream video, surf the web.
AMD A10-4600M (4 cores, 4 threads): per Passmark, single thread 1072, multi thread 1925 (1074 samples, low margin of error)

I bought this mainly for media consumption and light browsing when travelling and it has been great for that. Unlike the cheap screens on most budget devices, the FHD touchscreen on this looks good. CPU is weak but battery life is great. The lighter CPU also means no fans or vents on the bottom which can be nice (silent and flexible placement).

How does this CPU compare to the Snapdragon 7c? I picked up a few Acer Spin 513's for my kids for $199 but this seems like a much better deal.

The Kompanio 520 is worse than even the low end Celerons you can find in chromebooks for similar pricing. Only thing this has going for it is being a touch screen.

Is this a better deal at $200 with 8gb of ram?

Assuming neither color is unacceptable...

IMO, the decision comes down to whether or not you want a touch screen. To a lesser extent, whether or not a backlit keyboard is important to you. They're both budget offerings and spec'd that way.

Lenovo Slim 3
Touch screen
Slightly brighter screen (300 nits vs 250 nits)
MediaTek CPU scored higher in Passmark single thread & multi thread (scores posted in a previous response)
0.37lbs lighter (2.87lbs vs 3.24lbs)
@$51 cheaper ($149.00 vs.199.99 before Costco membership rebate)
Fanless (quiet)

HP 14" Chromebook Bundle at Costco
Longer warranty (2nd year via Costco Concierge)
90 day return (Costco)
More RAM (8GB vs. 4GB)
More eMMC storage (128GB vs. 64GB)
Backlit keyboard
Wireless mouse and sleeve included

I would not consider the Costco one.

I'd take this Acer (Cert. Refurb) for $202.39 from eBay given the 8GB/ 128GB/ backlit KB/ 2-in-1/ touchscreen/ AUE 2032/ 2-year warranty if I willing to spend $200 for an entry-level chromebook (affordable but more processing power).

If I only had $150 to spend and just looking for a lightweight CB mainly for media consumption and light web-surfing, then this Lenovo CB is fine given the decent display coupled with fan-less design and long battery life. BTW, this Lenovo hit $150 serveral times, is now basically a standard sale price. Likely to hit a bottom $130 when clearance sometime later....

Definitely one to consider at ~$200 if in the market for a Chromebook, provided the refurb condition and non-retail packaging aren't issues. AMD Ryzen 3 5125C CPU is 10-15 watts TDP depending upon how it is provisioned, which is higher than the CPUs in the other 2 CBs, so battery life might not be quite as good.

I got this a while back at the same price point. It was pretty good for high school usage, but my daughter was too rough and the screen got messed up. It's pretty readable still, but since it's touchscreen, it acts all glitchy, falsely registering ghost touches. Will need one that is more beefy and drop or squeeze resistant

I wouldn't suggest to you that there's going to be a life-altering difference between the two. The more significant difference (and price-driver) is that that Acer Spin 513 is a premium-ish, aluminum-framed 2-in-1 with 8GB 4GB of RAM. The Lenovo is a budget (read: mostly plastic) unit with 4GB of RAM. I'd personally recommend taking the RAM, 2-in-1 form factor and premium build for the extra $50 (I also personally prefer the Acer brand). However, if you're just buying for basic chromebook functionality there's no doubt that you're getting plenty of ChromeOS bang-for-buck with the Lenovo.

And both devices have Auto Update Expiration [google.com] support dates well past 2030.

Good luck!

Have you considered disabling the touch screen [lenovo.com]? Seems like an extreme option, but might remove any frustration associated with the basic operation of the device.

Good luck!
