It has a micro SD slot, so I would assume yes you could play files right off SD. However neither youtube review I watched mentioned this.

This is tempting.... sometimes I want to watch sports while I'm doing stuff on the computer or using the TV for something else.

I might pick one up just to take on trips..... the reviews do say the fan is pretty loud though, so putting one right in front of you on your desk might not be a great move.

If you're only looking for a 40" image size, just get a TV. It'll have better blacks, can be used during day, and you won't have to deal with focus or distortion. The newer TVs also draw less power (a few dozen Watts, vs a couple hundred for a projector).

The use case for a projector are
  • if you wnat a larger image than you can get with a TV (mine displays on a 150" screen).
  • to project an image where you can't or wouldn't want to place a TV (e.g. wall of a play room where kids might break a TV, outdoors during a party, etc).
  • you need a screen which disappears when not in use (e.g. 50" screen which rolls up into the ceiling when not in use). This is pretty rare - mostly RVs and boats.

Bear in mind that for most extended warranties, if the repair cost exceeds your purchase price, the warranty company will just cut you a check for your purchase price instead of fixing it, and terminate the warranty. The specs say it can do a 32"-150" image, so either the specs are lying or the review is wrong.

If the problem is focus distance (rather than throw - image size at a given distance), you can try adding a diopter. That's basically a thin lens that you mount in front. I don't recall if you'll need a positive diopter (for close-up photography) or negative. I suspect it's the negative, but the positive are much easier to find for sale. If you're nearsighted, your glasses are a negative diopter. You can try holding them in front and see if that lets you focus further.

Unfortunately, the price of a good diopter will probably equal the price of this projector deal. So you may be better off getting a projector which suits your needs out of the box.

Will this fool a non videophile on a 100" screen? I just spent almost 2 grand on a triple laser projector so I know it's not gonna be even close to the same ballpark but it would be nice to have something outside...

This. I looked up my cheap projector from windowfx that was around $70 on sale and it turns out that crappy thing has 1,200 lumens and 15% keystone correction. I would argue that thing is barely bright enough for windows and wish it was brighter and had shorter throw. Was excited this could be better if not the same as that crappy projector but does not seem to be the case

for $106 you can get a projector with 13000 lumens!! you can watch it on the sun!

Lol that was my initial thought as well that the lumens reported by the mfg were completely fake but I believe it. I have a 2,000 a 3,000 and a 4,000 ansi projector (for projector mapping) which are epson, benq and viewsonic so I can see the crappy windowfx one actually being in the ballpark of 800 although the lens, build quality and everything is bottom of the barrel low quality. Windowfx does not actually list lumens in their listings, had to pull the datasheet so a bit more believable vs a marketing gimmick

I bought a 1080p projector from Amazon for $140. Reviews were really good but I was not impressed. Was spec'd at 60 Hz but seemed more like it was 30 Hz. I ended up returning it. I can't imagine this is any better but at least for $30 I might have been more inclined to just keep it.
