It's unbelievable how much these superfast cards at high capacities came down in price so rapidly and artificially -- while the monstrous Sony Corporation's Type A version that they force you to use, with WORSE performance, remains stratospherically expensive. Meantime V90 UHS-II cards are similarly not an option. Market mischief all around.

I agree. I think the price on these will come down even further. The gen 4 cards coming out are even faster and really not more expensive. As you mentioned, the V90 SD cards are ridiculously priced for what they are.
Edited to add: I'm holding out for a good deal on a 1TB card with good specs.
Specs show Minimum: 850 MB/s, a bit "slow" but if you're not shooting sports or similar, or 4k+ video, should be okay. For a few bucks more, the new (just released) ProGrade Gold 512GB v4.0 Min Write Speed is 2400 MB/s at $179.99. Or, 2-pack ($324) brings the price per 512GB to around $162.

Any good camera with a deep buffer will do fine with 850 MB/s. I shoot BIF and can take more photos than I want with an OG Lexar CFx in my Canon R5 at 30fps. Also there is NO camera on the market at this time that has the hardware to support 4.0 so it's a waste of $ right now as far a write speeds go. If you have a 4.0 reader (extra expense) and fast computer you can download files faster, that's the only advantage right now.

Speaking of Gen 4 cards, I received my order from Prograde for Gold 512 Cfrexpress B v4 + the new v4 reader both %15 off with Prograde email coupon. Paid with Apple Pay and they didn't charge sales tax. Haven't tested them out yet on my R5. To benefit full speed from the reader, need USB 4 ports such as on Apple MacBook Pro's.

For you it's a waste, for others (myself included) it could be (is) well worth the $40. I wouldn't touch a card slower than 1000 MB/s (min/sustained) unless it was dirt cheap/bargain but that's just me. For the rare time I need it, I've had slower cards buffer on my Z9 which has a pretty deep buffer. To each his own.

Only if you are oblivious to the fact that those cf type b are BASICALLY nvme 2230 cards in a different plastic shell. They are electrically compatible. therefore 2230 to cr type b case exist.
Really, how much is a 512G nvme drive? Certainly not 200 dollars.
this is exactly like how Microsoft force you to use proprietary storage shell for Xbox, even when the hard drive inside are exactly the same, you paying premium just for the name, and the plastic around it
For those who need this card, do yourself a favor and look into the adapters that let you use 2230 M.2 SSDs in this form factor. Thanks to the steam deck, those drives have become widely available and inexpensive, and many have better performance than this too.
I've seen people argue that using one of those is somehow less trustworthy than a purpose-built card like this, but I'd argue that consumer SSDs from WD, Samsung etc have a well established record of reliability and support beyond flash memory card sellers. And as for the adapter, if anything it gives me confidence. Because if the casing or contacts wear out or get damaged, your data is still easily accessible just by pulling out the m.2 card inside. That's not an option with cards like the one in this post.
Not here to evangelize though, just want to be sure people are aware of the option.

Omg, I just upgraded my camera to an R5 and bought the 512gb Gold v4.0 and the v4.0 reader (also 64gb v90 sd card for other camera slot)… I cannot believe how fast my 4K videos transferred! I have no reference to the speed of the previous gen but these feel lightning fast compared to what I came from… and for reference the reader was plugged into my MacBook Pro M1 Max. Super happy about it. Probably going to get one more soon as a backup.

Quick googled, I found this: ORICO M.2 NVMe SATA SSD Enclosure Adapter Tool-Free, USB C 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps NVMe, 5Gbps NGFF SATA PCIe M-Key(B+M Key) 2230/2242/2260/2280, [amazon.com] and wasn't sure if this right.
