As per reviews, home hub is needed, sold separately.
Hub is needed for Matter. Hub is not needed for typical operation. If you're buying this just for Matter, I'm sure you already have a hub you're using for other devices.
This will work with your Google/Alexa home assistant without a hub.

Will these work in the Kasa app? I have a lot in there already and wanted to try a couple with matter to control with a button like Tuo. I'm not aware of a battery remote control that can turn on/off my Kasa switches and Tuo looks promising but requires Matter.

EDIT: Searched and found out Tapo app is required and Kasa devices show up there but not the other way around.

Any feedback from Kasa users that went to Tapo? Works just as well?
I had a bunch of TP link switches and plugs , and ended up buying a bunch of Tapo plug's for Christmas lighting. All the devices showed up automatically in the Tapo app with their schedules in tact. It adds a few things I don't recall seeing in Kasa like device run time. I'd say I like the Tapo app design slightly more.

Tapo is actually a better app than Kasa. You can control Kasa items in Tapo also. I used both because I have Kasa setup with so much automations and schedules.

The non dimmer ones I have installed have wires to pigtail. If your outlet box is too small, you might want to consider replacing it with a deeper one. Depends how much effort you want to spend. Lowe's has some old work boxes which allows you screw into a stud: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Southwir...5001937965
I've used them successfully and fairly often, but I'm not a fan of the Southwire Smart Box ones. Too difficult to work with. The clamps are way too tight and they are difficult to get perfectly flush.

I highly recommend either the Sliderbox, which is more forgiving of repositioning (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Allie.../311531557) or the Arlington One Box, but the Arlington can be hard to find outside electrical supply shops.

Repeat after me: no Matter how promising some new tech sounds or how good of a deal it seems like, Zigbee is the way.

(That's mostly a "note to self". May or may not apply to you. Also, I might be full of shit. It's happened.)
Matter can work with Zigbee or zwave AFAIK but also with Threads which seems to me the way going forward. But yeah, I'd rather not clog up my Wifi with these.

FYI, everyone should be buying Tapo from here on out. TP-Link is going to be phasing out Kasa switches. While the Kasa switches will remain for sale, there is not going to be major upgrades to the switches.

Kasa switches can be added to the Tapo app, but not vice versa. The phasing out is the reason.

Does this have a physical switch or is it all based on detecting motion and being controlled by an app? If it has a bad wifi connection will you be unable to turn the lights on?

Anyone know if these use screw/push in terminals or wires with pigtails and nuts/wagos? I have some of the latter style and the poor front screws are holding on to the sockets for dear life with all the wires jammed behind them. I could see having a lead for neutral so you can splice it in but you should at least be able to just pop in the hot lead.
I have a couple of Kasa branded ones that look the same. They have the pigtails which I am also not a fan off.

These are switches. There is no motion sensor.

Yes you can phyiscally push the switch on / off and don't need the app at all even to use them as simple manual switches.

I have Eufy smart switch which looks exactly same as Kasa and this. The app is slightly better as it has a random turn on and off feature which is ideal for away/vacation mode to simulate presense.

Kasa app sucks as I can't even figure out how to schedule turn the switch on and off at set time (terrible UI)

Maybe Tapo is better. Kasa switches were 3 for $29 on Amazon.

You don't want 5ghz on a low bandwidth device. You want maximum range and lowest power which, between 2.4 and 5ghz the obvious choice is 2.4ghz. Lower the frequency the better.
I'm using a mesh system and not sure how go about getting the 2.4ghz signal from the system.

Dang, I just bought a bunch of Kasa switches a few weeks ago. I didn't even know these existed, or I would've bought the newer version, instead. WTF is Matter and why do I care? 😂
