Headphone jack: Apple removed the headphone jack during the time I'm sure more than 10% of users did use them. They could've easily launched Airpods alongside the headphone jack, but they timed it that way because it benefits them and created a Billion dollar industry out of thin air. (We all know how Samsung ridiculed it, but then noticed the money it made and followed course)
Apple claims: Innovation, Ease-of-use, Slimmer phones, water-resistance
Myth bust: Providing users the choice doesn't take away from ease or innovation. Galaxy S8, S9 were slimmer, had larger batteries and provided water resistance.
Reality: More money for the company
Do users miss this in 2022? ~50% do. https://www.androidpoli
Expandable storage / microSD: Support for microSD card is something most would appreciate and use. 128G is not enough for many, esp. if they shoot videos. (Ask any pet parent). I had never bought the higher storage tier phones when they had expandable storage - because the base storage was enough for my apps and OS, and I had the freedom of expanding storage when I needed. And external storage also approached very good speeds around the time they were deprecated on phones. By removing this, they have forced millions of casual users to consider upgrading storage tiers for that one occassion where they might otherwise run out of space - and that is an easy $100 or more upchage. And in most cases these storage tiers don't move the needle enough in terms of increased trade-in / resale values.
Company claims: Not fast enough, not needed, not used by most people.
Myth bust: High-Speed microSD were sufficiently fast for recording 4K video to card. If not needed or not used, why do we see so many people choose higher storage tiers?
Do people miss this in 2023? Apparently ~84% still do. https://www.androidauth
User-replaceable batteries are also another topic of contention - proving to be one of Top 3 reasons contributing to planned obsolescence in Smartphones, though IMO not brazen as the above 2 anti-consumer moves.

Companies collect huge data on user habits and preferences, but they don't always use them to give more of what users want - they also use this data to hold arbitrage of features they care, and market a different form of them that users will be forced to pay for - eventually driving profits. I've ranted enough - all I'm saying is let us not drink the kool aid fed by these companies' PR.
I would personally love to have the option of a microSD card, but i can understand why Samsung would leave off that feature.
I am currently sitting at 128GB videos, 32.55GB photos, and 84.45GB miscellaneous. Photos/Video quality is always improving and I would rather have them stored on my phone for instant access.
SD card is greatly appreciated if brought back. Sadly I don't believe that companies have our best interest when decisions like these are made.
@watsyourdeal summed it up really well. Eveything has just been an oppotunity to maximize profits I.E not including charging bricks for phones anymore to reduce ecowaste yet having no problem selling you one on the side. If the corporations truly had that in mind, then why not just include a voucher for individuals who really needed one to claim *if needed*.

Thanks!
You're pretending as if big corporations never make user hostile actions to increase their profits SMH

1) sd cards make significant Z stackup compromises (phone thickness)
2) percentage of SD card use by users was around only 10%
3) Serious sealing complications and compromises (water resistance)
4) anonymous usage data collected from phones indicates it isn't heavily used, as it turns out SD cards are used by enthusuasts and enthusuasts are also the people who turn off anonymous usage statistics. When you turn off that data collection you are voting that your use case doesn't matter and won't be included in product decisions.
5) user studies have shown that the value/cost trade of for users for SD cards is very low (near the bottom) this means when asked "will you pay $X more for an SD card" the users studies said they don't want to pay for it.
6) regarding "they do it to rip off customer and force them to buy cloud and onboard flash memory" The engineer just laughed and shook his head.
Thanks again for playing product expert.
I'm curious how those people will be able to upgrade again this year if they are locked into bill credits. Typically I only pay a couple hundred dollars and I'm able to get the newest phone every year. But this bill credit thing seems to put a stop to it. I prefer to own my phone's out right so I don't owe anybody anything if I want to leave or if I break it.
I want to switch to AT&T's firstnet plan, but you can't use the unlocked phones on that. It has to be an AT&T phone. I'm guessing to get the AT&T version I'll have to sign up for bill credits. I know to AT&T has an annual upgrade plan you can buy, but I did the math last year and it is a total rip off.
Hopefully I can grab a S23 ultra for good price on this new release.

But, those who speculate or dictate WHY manufacturers do what they do without any industry experience or knowledge are propagating bad information that doesn't help anyone. Dunning Kreugers hurt everyone with bad information. That's mostly why I argue: to provide better more accurate information.
Hopefully I can grab a S23 ultra for good price on this new release.
