Depends on usage. I've got gen 1 that are doing fine after multiple years but I don't use them that often. If you're using nonstop consider applecare+, assuming it covers battery wear — too lazy to look it up

Convenience? If you don't actually want to return the device and deal with having to buy a new pair down the road. Assume Costco is marketing that bundle of AirPods+applecare to the mass market. Most consumers are not thinking "if this breaks I'll just return to Costco" they are thinking "this is a nice product and it's cool that the better warranty is free!"
