8GB RAM. Don't do it. You shouldn't even buy a windows laptop with 8GB. 16GB needs to be the standard, especially if you're paying 1k+

i've been going back and forth on this. I bought the 16" M1 pro with 16gb for $1740 after tax from the recent woot deal but saw that the M1 air with 8gb is available for $815 after tax.

Given that I will be using the laptop to learn programming and read pdfs while taking notes, I didn't see the extra power of the 16gb pro to be worth it.

I think one could simply manage their resources better such that 8gb could be sufficient. Just dont have too many things open at once, problem solved right?

That being said, is the M2 air for $1050 a better deal than the M1 air for $750?

It's also Tax Holiday in FL, so you won't pay taxes from Jan 1 - Jan 24 on qualifying school items. That includes computers.

After thinking through this, I think the $750 M1 is a better deal because regardless of the additional features that the 15" M2 provides, it's still an 8GB machine. Not worth the $300 extra.

Macs have a lot of longevity, especially now that Apple has their own processors which are fantastic. I would pick a year older laptop with more RAM if I were to make the decision personally. Programs are not going to get smaller as time goes on and not going to require less RAM, that's why 16GB is so important. Phones have 8-12 pretty standard these days, no reason a computer shouldn't. If this was a cheap couple hundred dollar laptop, no big deal, but this is premium one. That's why it bothers me.

if this computer is faster, is more durable, has a better screen, and has a longer battery life than a windows computer priced the same with 16gb, does that make your argument irrelevant?

Sure 16gb is better, but 8gb is fine for basic user that wants something nicer than a chromebook, wife has base M1 for web, youtube, zoom, office, works fine and snappy

I have used a fairly recent and good spec'd windows 16gb/512gb ssd laptop and a 8gb/256gb macbook. I will say that the mac still wins in terms of responsiveness. Not to mention the windows was always glitchy (both hardware e.g. trackpad, touch screen and the software).

Mind you that I don't do pro editing. Just some node js programming, browsing (~40 tabs maybe), streaming and word/excel processing. I don't worry about disk space because most of my data is on the cloud. I don't worry about SSD life because my laptop cycle is 3 years on average. There are things youtube content creators will tell you to worry about but are going to be non-consequential for most people.

8GB is a good buy for most people. Period.

is the M2 worth roughtly 1.5 times the cost of the $750 M1? nope, save your money and get the M1. Then with the money save upgrade to the M3 or whatever is around $750 3-4 yrs from now

For those that say 16GB is a must, I would say most of them haven't actually used an M1/M2 with just 8GB. I have had both M1 and M2 8GB Airs since they came out. I have done some photo editing with Affinity Photo and some basic iMovie movies. Neither of them really lag. For basic day to day things, I've had multiple browsers open with multiple tabs + MS Office or Excel open along with Messages, Calendar, and Contacts open without any lagging. Unless you're a significant pro, 8GB will be fine. If you're a pro and doing lots of video editing, go with a Macbook Pro. These are hands down my favorite computers I've ever owned.
