Victor Conte developed ZMA. Everything it contains can be found in a multivitamin - albeit in different quantities (vitamin b6, zinc & magnesium).
Conte worked with the Denver Broncos Super Bowl winning teams in the late 90s. He was also involved with doping Olympic athletes (Marion Jones) & baseball players (Barry Bonds) with what were at that time undetectable steroids.
In order to make legal money off of his illegal activity, he had Bonds appear in Bodybuilding magazines promoting ZMA as being responsible for his physique (when it was actually the steroids he was giving him). Quid pro quo - I don't tell that I'm giving you steroids, you promote my snake oil & help me make money. You can Google images of Bonds wearing ZMA gear & posing with Conte.
Conte set up a bogus scientific study that claimed ZMA raised testosterone levels. Multiple independent studies have proven that to be false, but he still makes big money every year selling ZMA & referencing the fake study.
So there you have the formula for the OTC supplement industry…take a steroid fueled model & have them sell a worthless OTC supplement to naive people… to make legal money off of illegal drug use. You can't be honest & sell the illegal drugs on a massive scale, so you have to lie & sell snake oil that is legal.
Conte eventually got busted. He admitted he talked to someone else on usenet & they took the formula for a steroid found in the Merck index & modified it - so its signature would be different & wouldn't be detected on drug tests. Testing today doesn't only rely on an exact chemical signature to identify drug use, but back then it did.
Conte now takes the role of an anti-doping advocate & trying to help that movement. But he still takes the money from ZMA sales & lives a nice life from it, something that was developed as a scam 20+ years ago.
The book "Game of Shadows" about Barry Bonds doping is a good read on the subject.
It's something like a 5% performance gain & it's one of the only OTC supplements with any scientific evidence behind it…which shows how low the bar is with OTC supplements.
Don't get me started on ZMA & the story behind that one, it will ruin your view of the supplement industry.
I'm intrigued. I'm 35 years old and been taking ON Whey on & off. So, should I not be taking it and just eat after my workouts? I'm trying to get a bit bigger. I'm 6'2" and roughly 190lbs.
Protein powder won't hurt you, but it's not steroids. If you eat a normal diet & consume dietary protein, it's not that necessary & isn't going to make a huge difference.
I think we're eventually going to see the veil pulled back & we'll look at the fitness industry a lot differently.
At the top of the pyramid of importance should be genetics & hormones. We can manipulate hormones today, so that's what makes the largest difference in a physique. Soon we'll be able to alter genetics as well.
Diet & exercise should sit below genetics & hormones. Where the body chooses to store fat is genetic - some people have a good variation, some people have a bad variation.
We accept that things like height are determined by genetics, but when it comes to a physique (leanness, musculature) or athletic ability we want to make it 100% about work ethic. It's not just about work ethic, your potential is not the same as everyone else's potential.
Maybe in the next 20 years it'll be looked at differently, guess we'll see.

Agree 👍🏼
I jumped on a ridiculous GNC deal several years ago where it was something like spend $50 get $50 off (I have to dig it up), I bought so much stuff that I had to give away protein powder and supplements. Anyway, this past summer I found an unopened creatine from the deal and started taking it. After a week or so I was swole and making gains. I ran out so I bought a large Bulk Supplements creatine on Amazon after being off for a few weeks. Stuff tasted like shoe polish. No effect. I went out and bought a new GNC creatine and same thing. Nasty taste and no effect. I'm curious if these new batches are being cut or aren't the same purity as 5-10 years ago.
edit: happy birthday!
Similar. Saw my past purchase was $14.43.

I don't do crazy strength work, but I train intensely(according to my polar H10 anyway). Everything else being constant, Creatine definitely makes a difference in how heavy the weights feel. Attacking the weight as an inviting challange or looking at the next rep as a chore with disgust; which way would you like to feel?
My only gripe is that it seems much harder for me to lose weight while on this stuff.
Timing isn't terribly important. Aim to be in a calorie surplus and aim for 0.7-1g of protein per pound bodyweight per day.
Nothing special about protein powder besides helping you hit your protein target. Most people struggling to put on weight can probably benefit from it though.

Yeah, I struggle a bit eating. I don't eat breakfast as often. so, I usually just eat a post workout mea + a protein shake and dinner.
Unflavored is $1.02 per ounce while this deal is $1.25 per ounce. Chance for an additional 10% off for buying two items as well.
Thanks, went with two of these vs the fp deal

This is the 120 serving version for 25.15
so the price literally increased 400/120 = 333%. Damn
