These are my favorite strippers as a electrician. DO NOT buy their other hand tools though. I've seen multiple ideal screwdrivers and diagonal cutters shatter. Then again they may be better now.

Sorry to bother you but I'm curious what a professional thinks of auto wire strippers like these IRWIN Vise-grips [amazon.com].

I have the IRWIN and I find them fun/enjoyable to use but I rarely strip wires; mostly speaker cord or small wire for simple vintage toy and video game repair.

Do professionals find auto strippers handy or a pain and unreliable to use? I'm inferring that professionals prefer the basic stripper which is reliable and has less chance of failure due to their simplicity. Any feedback would be appreciated; thank you.

I never see other master or journeyman electricians using auto strippers. I mean the steps involved in stripping a wire with regular strippers is; Pick up tool, squeeze down on wire and flick your wrist - DONE. Autostrippers don't really speed that process up in anyway while being a much larger & bulkier tool. Autostrippers are also known to be very finicky on 14awg or larger wire (basically 99% of what we work on). They also have to be adjusted constantly from my understanding. When you're going back & forth stripping solid/stranded 12, 14 & 10awg wire different lengths that could be time consuming. Where autostippers shine is with small wire & where space is limited. Since auto strippers kind of "grab" the wire they limit the risk of "tugging" the other end out of whatever it may be in, like soldered onto a board for example.. Autostrippers kind of just rip/pull the insulation off with friction vrs regular strippers cut it 360degrees around. Hope that helps

Good to hear. This set is still on clearance on a few Lowe's stores that have them in stock. I've bought them there in the last week for $9.99, but getting them through AMZ w/ 5% rewards because of Chase AMZ Visa is a tiny bit better.

Saw these same strippers discounted at Lowe's (in-store) earlier this week for ... I want to say about $8? Maybe this model is getting discontinued?
