Quote from Buffalob :
8th gen processors…
- "Officially" supported by Windows 11.
- 6 Core / 12 Thread (Boost to 4.6GHz)
- Nvidia Quadro P2000 5gb GDDR5 (based on GTX 1060, and is 13% slower)
- 32gb RAM
- 512gb SSD

Seems like a legit computer for $300 bucks.

Aren't the 8th Gen pretty comparable up to 11th Gen? Like I can't recall all details, but I remember doing lots of comparisons and being disappointed in subsequent generational gains.

If you're using Plex at all, this is worth it just for the P2000.

all indications say it's standard ATX (i.e., you can replace it). 300W or 460W. 850W is possible but likely super special config only.

If you don't have a Plex server already, it's an incredible start!

For $300, the best Plex upgrade IMO would be a 4060. I just picked up a 4060 8GB for $250 used. With the modified drivers, there's no stream limitations. HDR to SDR, 8K, AV1, it's a total monster.

Edit: there are a lot of caveats to my comment. The 4060 was the best upgrade option for my server since I'm running Windows and have lots of Windows-only software and services that I can't give up at this time. I'd like to switch to unraid someday...

Yes, once you get to Pascal nvenc gets pretty good. Although if it is just the video card needed for plex save the money and pick up a P400 off ebay for really cheap.

CPU gains are minimal, but the biggest change is probably the pcie 4.0 m.2 slots that allow for much faster transfer speeds on the 11th gen and up. For regular business use, you probably wouldn't notice too much though

For Plex, I would actually pull the P2000 to save on electricity and unnecessary drivers. This or even the newer 4060 have stock driver limitations of only 1 or 2 streams at a time.

The built in Intel GPU of any Intel CPU 8th gen or higher is far superior. It can do 4x 4k or 28x 1080p streams easily. Also it'll draw no addition wattage compared to the Nvidia 8w-80w. Seems small but in my area, that'll cost an extra $8-$80/year and adds up over the 3-5 years you'll plan to use the server.

If I didn't already have a capable Plex server I'd buy this. This is a perfect Plex box. Has the 8th Gen i5 for hardware transcoding of all types of media. Has the quadro for even more hardware encoding of streams. Has a full case for 3.5" drives. This would be an incredible nas/Plex server combo.

Please remember that Quick Sync can only "do it all" under Linux. Anyone wanting a seamless Windows PMP experience needs Nvidia NVENC.

It's a real shame that we can't achieve feature parity across all operating systems and hardware... but here we are...

Been patiently waiting for a good deal to replace my ~10 year old desktop, and decided to pull the trigger on this. Wife needs an upgrade for her Photoshop work mainly.

That's true, depending on your area power costs can differ substantially.

In my case, I'm running 2x Dell T640 servers (18x 3.5" drives in one, 32x 2.5" drives in the other), 2x Lenovo P620 workstations (Threadripper Pro 5xxx series, 2 custom/self-built desktops, one 13900k w\nVidia 4090, and the other an AMD 7950x3d w\AMD 7900XTX), 4 windows laptops (1 a Lenovo P16G2 workstation) a Mac mini, and an M2 Pro laptop, and 1 or 2 external monitors for each, a QNAP 1688x w\nvidia P2000 (and 18x drives), and a QNAP TVS 871T w\26 drives.

I run my own business, work in IT, and game a decent bit. All to say my definition of power consumption may be ever so slightly skewed from what would be "normal". I honestly didn't even consider power when making my comment, but I think your comment is great from a power perspective and could render noticeable savings.

Idk Costco has a dell 9020 with a 13th gen i5 for $449. Kinda seems like a lot more bang for your buck? https://www.costco.com/dell-inspi...ue&nf=true
