Walmart is showing $120 when added to cart. I'm super tempted but don't have the rack currently.

Sorry I was trying to shorten SEO URL and linked to the wrong up. Updated now. But looks like other chassis are on sale too, like the 4000 for $120 as you pointed out.

Thanks, in for one. I was literally just looking at this a few days ago. From what I've read, it's a decent basic chassis, just plan on replacing the crappy fans with Noctuas. I read a few instances on Reddit with people having issues on the backplane, but it seemed the consensus is you have to just shove the drive in hard to make it connect good.

Do you know what connector the backplane uses? I have a spare Perc H310 that I believe uses SFF-8087. It looks like fitting a 360 AIO cooler in this would be pretty trivial too.

I have a few Dell poweredge 12th Gen servers which are insanely cheap, but I wanted this case so I could eventually switch to a more standard form factor, as those servers are pushing over 10 years old now. The only gripe I can see is this chassis has practically doubled in price since Covid, oh well can't go back now.

Thanks again!

SATA I guess? I read that it is the same chassis as the 4500 (15 bay) with the hotswap cages added. I think these https://www.rosewill.com/rosewill...072GJ92805

Here is the manual for the cage
https://images10.newegg.com/Uploa...004250.pdf

Mine should be arriving tomorrow.

Was it lower than this pre-covid? I didn't see anything lower than this on CCC historical, but I've only recently started looking for server chassis.

And you're welcome.

I think I am mistaken, the case people on Reddit were referring to was the 4500 I believe which is significantly cheaper. From what I can find this is a pretty good price!

I think you are right in that the backplane just has 4 separate SATA ports for each cage. I was hoping it'd just be a SFF-8087 connector, but at this price point it's hard to complain.

Part of me wanted to splurge on the new 45HomeLab HL15 that just came out, but that's $800 lol. Man homelabbing can be expensive!

These are nice, but the drive cages are a big pain in the butt. I opted to go with these cages that fit instead: https://www.rosewill.com/rosewill...072GJ92556

These don't have a "backplane" per-se you need to run SATA cables to the motherboard/HBA and PSU power to each drive.

I've got the R4000U case with 2x RSV-SATA-Cage-34 installed each with a noctua fan, 2x LSI SAS2008 9200-8i in IT mode and it works really well.

If you can get it for 140 now, find a rack on facebook marketplace later. I would pick up a second one for that price. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY or the other cases that do not give you access to the drives via a sled. I have mine racked up and have been replacing my older smaller drives with larger ones and the sled makes it sooooooo freaking simple.

I have picked up the L4600u from Newegg back in Dec. I am not sure whether the L4500u is a better buy at the same price point. The L4600u is essentially the same but the cages must be unscrewed from within the case in order to add HDDs and there is no front door.

I picked up 2x 15 drive ones. I don't need one at the moment but the price was too tempting to pass

I'd rather buy a recycled old chassis with SAS backplane.

An old recycled SuperMicro server chassis with SAS expander backplane that supports connecting all drives via only one SFF-8087 cable is what you want.

With this SATA backplane (or no backplane at all) you can only connect 4 drives per each SFF-8087 cable with a split cable.
