Always buy weights based of $1= 1 pound (max).
5 pound plate equals $5
10 pound plate equals $10
25 pound plate equals $25
35 pound plate equals $35
45 pound plate equals $45

If you find a discount on top of this standard measurement then buy it because that is the true slickdeal.

Anyone have experience with the "Color Best"? Thinking about getting 4x45 2x25 and 4x10 plates to replace all my iron

I have the 4x45s and 2x55s. They are extremely durable. I have owned them for 7 years now and one set of 45s gets used almost everyday and they look barely used.

At the risk of getting "do you even lift bro?" comments: Does anybody ever see non-Olympic stuff on sale? If so, where?

It's just what I started with when I got into this years ago, buying used on Craigslist, and I don't really want to start over with Olympic gear. I can still go to Craigslist or Play It Again Sports sometimes, but that doesn't always work.

The budgets don't seem to be standard diameter. Spec (in inches) is 17.72" +/- .04, so the advertised diameter of 17.75" for the "better" meets that. However, budgets are advertised as 17.9". This could be a problem if you already have other plates.

Somewhat strangely, the width of the "budget" is more narrow than "better" (just looking at the 45s). I'd have expected the budgets to be a less dense material, but perhaps that it due to the larger-than-standard diameter vs. materials - don't feel like doing the math.

Right, this is why I didn't purchase because I had other weights and this would cause issues on the bar with a larger diameter. It's a great deal if you don't already have other plates or as a starter set.

Thank you for the first hand feedback. Got a full set of the Best Color.

Now to deal with FB Market people and try to offload my iron sets.

Anyone know what is inside? Steel metal plates dipped in rubber? Sand? Cast Iron?

25 they're back in stock! Picked up two sets to get buff and stuff 💪🏋️ 😃. Might get a pair of 10s to put in between. Plan to let em sit in the garage for a good air out. Thanks OP

I got my 45s, 15s and 10s delivered so far, and they have some rubber smell but it was not bad at all. Also, the quality is great and every single one I got weighed at least their stated weight or slightly more, and overall I'm very happy.

You must be referring to "standard weights", which is ironically named because Olympic gear is the de facto standard used in most weightlifting applications. I've had success getting standard bars and weights on Craigslist, and my local area on Facebook marketplace. It's just a smaller market overall and as a result there's less interest from a lot of the top manufacturers, and the quality of standard plates can often reflect this by not being very good.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no weight snob telling you you gotta reinvent the wheel. Stick with the standard plates and continue building up your set. I'd say local fitness stores and Craigslist/marketplace would be great options to add more equipment.

Maybe slightly counterintuitive, but it's often preferable in higher quality bumper plates to have the smallest bumper plates made of less dense material, intentionally wider for increased surface area and shock absorption, protecting the barbell from shock in more ballistic applications. Like if someone is practicing snatches/cleans at a light weight and want to drop the bar from overhead. The main downside of thicker plates is when you're maxing out the bar, you could run out of room for plates on the barbell collars, but that wouldn't even be a relevant concern in this type of situation.
