I would consider the msi raider ge78hx a better buy at $2k. Twice the ram, better processor, bigger screen, far far better speakers, better keyboard and trackpad, much better thermal design, and overall better build. The size isn't that different. The helios is constantly on sale but very few user reviews, meaning actual users buying it.

Size is pretty different and so is the weight. Regarding thermals, may be you want to check some reviews. There are plenty of 16 inch laptops which beats 18 inch MSI in performance.

I've researched both of these for months. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. The helios is one of the biggest 16" laptops. Not as big as the alienware m16, but still big. The msi has monstrous cooling. It can do full 175w power on the gpu while on BALANCED mode at 42db. The helios needs to heavily drop down wattage to achieve the same thing. You can just look at the heatpipe and fan configuration. Big difference. There's a reason they offer the helios with a 4060 with the same cooling on all models. It barely cuts it, and needs to be a jet engine to handle higher. It also has the loudest fans at max. Everything else is superior on the msi, from build to sound. Sound especially is miles ahead. It has a six speaker setup. The helios gets awful rating for sound. The msi was originally a $3500+ machine. It was way overpriced and that's why people overlooked it. The helios is a budget machine from the beginning. Like I said before, for only $200, you get way way more. In isolation the helios is not bad.

Can you point me to some review sites or videos from your research, shwoing that Acer helios is significantly throttling or performing poor? And regarding MSI, Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, Asus ROG Strix Scar 16, despite being smaller and lighter, they beats the MSI Titan and there are some reasons for that. MSI might look a bigger bad ass super chilled laptop but in reality, a lot of smaller laptop can beat it in performance.

No Advanced Optimus and no G-sync on the MSI unit for those comparing.

I'm not heavy into gaming but I do tons of video decoding. I also need a Number pad and would like a computer that I can buy a docking station for it. I'd like to use it for both my desktop and work laptop. Is this viable?

I do quite a bit of stuff on my 2022 Helios. I rarely ever use the fans on Max. It is LOUD, but not necessary for the most part. I constantly monitor my GPU temps. with the built in hotkey. I would say though that the secondary M.2. can run a bit hot sometimes even with the heat sink. It's not a problem, because I can adjust the fans to cool it off. I find that using a separate cooling pad works much better. I use a IETS GT500 Powerful Turbo-Fan, which can be way louder.

You can get docking stations for any laptop that supports at least USB 2.0. This laptop supports USB 3.2 and Thunderbolt 4, so you have a large selection of docking stations to choose from. The Nvidia GPU can certainly handle decoding and there is a numpad, so I'd say this laptop meets your needs as described.
