Deluxe+State not including e-file for that state is such a scam move intending to deceive anyone not paying attention.

Now that Intuit is requiring people to register the software to an account beginning this filing year, I'll be moving over to this software. Intuit has gone full on EVIL although they were pretty evil even before this. They want to know everything about a person and they reserve the right to sell the information... thus making them a powerful data broker. No thanks Intuit!

How is that stupidity? Not everyone gets a refund or needs the refund that they have to file right out of the gate. Further, tax rules get updated throughout the tax season, so filing early might require one to amend their return.
If you wait until the last minute and then find you are missing a document or need to research something, you may end filing late (or inaccurately) and end up owing a penalty.

As for a refund, you should NEVER try to get a refund. You should always aim to pay as much as possible without owing a penalty.

Does anyone know how these HRBLOCK software's compare to the online versions @ H&RBLOCK.com? Im specifically trying to find the equivalent to the HRBLOCK SELF EMPLOYED tier of tax software. I usually end up paying about $100 for fed and state through HRBLOCK.com. I take it that the only difference between these HRBLOCK software's and the online virions is that these are locally installed on your machine vs the cloud with HRBLOCK.com. Any clarity would be appreciated.

Yeah, I didn't say you should aim for a refund. I'm saying that's one instance why someone would want to file ASAP.

As far as filing time goes, no one said to do taxes in the 11th hour. The person being quoted just said end of season, the meaning of which is debatable. Also, the act of filing taxes and preparing to file are two separate things. You can have all of your docs ready in February and not file until late March or deadline. It's a matter of organization. If you're a disorganized person, then definitely try to file as soon as you can as you are more likely to discover what you might be missing. For everyone else, it doesn't make it stupid to file close to the deadline.

And like I said, tax guidelines change throughout the season and filing too early could have negative impact.

You're not going to get these offers on their cloud versions. And it looks like Investments is in Deluxe on offline but only in Premium in online.

So, to me, don't waste your time with online versions.

If your situation is simple, this probably works. I couldn't get free tax USA to work for me, but this was years ago. It wasn't any better than doing taxes by hand on paper. Maybe it's better now.

I've been using it for years and it's pretty simple to use. I did mine by paper first and then did a comparison and it sure was easier and worked. It's nice that it has all the income sources from previous year and you just have to update it (add or delete). I usually have a shc. C each year so it does work for small business. Have no State income tax tho.

recommendations on which version to buy?

I have a w-2 job, kids, a mortgage and a side hustle selling items on amazon (less than 20k in sales volume so I won't get a 1099k)
Use Freetaxusa it's FREE and will do what you need it to do.

It also allows you to fill out a sch C if you need to for your side hustle. I haven't paid for tax service for years and still file a sch C. I have used Quicken previously to keep track of income and expenses. Reluctant to use them because of them changing to annual fee BS.

I've been aware of this every year and I think it's such a joke. You have to do print it out and send it in, but I never do. What's the way around this? Are you saying you might as well get the version without state?
You still need the state version to fill out the forms, which can then be printed and mailed. You may also be able to e-file for free directly on your state's website. I've found it easier to fill out in H&R first because you get the softwares guidance, and then transfer to my state's website, but you could probably skip that step and not pay for the state forms up front.

List of states with free e-file directly with them: https://thefinancebuff.com/free-e...irect.html

Of course, Cash App taxes is free including federal and state e-file. FreeTaxUSA is free federal e-file and $15 state e-file.

Wait, are you saying the IRS will let you file before 11:58pm on April 15th??? Lol

Desktop deluxe version is much more complete. It will do self employed, investment income, etc. There are very few reasons to upgrade to premium, despite what the marketing would suggest.

I'm going to Mexico later this month. Does anyone know if I can use FreeTaxUSA, CashApp, and/or H&R Block software while in Mexico? I earned all my money in the USA in 2023 and have lived in the USA the entire year so I won't be paying taxes for multiple places or anything like that. Thanks!

I have questions on tax in general...Do the IRS check every single filing every year? I have used this software for year but I don't know if I did it correctly...I meant i file with my best knowledge and understanding of what the software asked for...kinda wondering if I should go to a CPA once every certain year to have them check?

I paid $15 for Deluxe last year around this time. 18 is close enough to have it taken care of and not be waiting for a possible eventual better deal to save literally a few bucks.

The real pain with this is the $39.99 to add a 2nd state if you have to file multiple states. Can I just buy 2 deluxe+state or use two computers to do 2 states for one person?

I believe that is doable, but tricky. I think there are instructions in old threads here. There may also be a workaround with one purchase by installing to two computers.

Or pay $15 per state with FreeTaxUSA.
