Product page mentions a $500 rebate [images-amazon.com] for Colorado & New Mexico Xcel Energy customers. I don't have a Xcel login to see the full terms and conditions for that. Was some discussion in a previous thread about it. Walmart [walmart.com] also has it for this price, not sure if the rebate applies there also.

I bought one of these earlier this fall for around $450 so this is a great price. I installed this as a hardwired setup at my son's house. It's on a 50A service and works great operating at a 40A charge rate. There's an additional benefit for hardwiring the Chargepoint. Doing so will usually allow a much cheaper standard breaker to be used. If you're going to install it with a NEMA plug then a GFCI breaker will be required by many municipalities. The GFCI breaker was a lot more expensive for my son's electrical panel, it was about $200 for the 50A GFCI breaker alone. The standard non-GFCI 50A breaker only cost me $30. I have about 35yrs of experience as an electro-mechanical engineer working with a lot of high power equipment. Based on what I've seen over the years, I didn't feel comfortable installing this high amperage service on a NEMA plug so that's why we went hardwired and the cheaper install costs were an added benefit.

If you've having an electrician install this charger in a hardwired config make sure they understand that the charger has built-in protection and likely will not require a GFCI breaker. If they're still saying that by code you have to install GFCI protection then I'd get a 2nd opinion from a different electrical contractor.
From the Chargepoint install manual "If local codes require a GFCI breaker for plug-in installation, ChargePoint recommends a hardwire installation. We do not recommend
using a GFCI breaker as the Home Flex has charging circuit interrupting
device (CCID) protection. Using a GFCI breaker in the panel can cause
nuisance tripping."
Seems like you can remove the plug from this one and hardwire it. Says so on the product page
As a counterpoint to this gentleman's experience, I have had at least a dozen to several dozen plug in nema 14-50 chargers installed for myself and others since 2014. All are still in operation and none have had any issues.

I want to point out that you need to use the proper gauge wiring if you want to safely get the maximum output from these destination chargers. Example, Tesla's stage 2 recommends minimum 6 gauge copper wire, however, if you want the maximum output (48A), you'll need 4 gauge copper wire and a 60A breaker. A good portion of the cost will go into the copper wire. Anybody find any good deals on 4-3 copper wire?
I believe the charge point only handles 6AWG wire. I believe the current rating of the wire is based on Romex vs. Individual THHN wire in conduit. To get the 48 amp or 50amp full capacity you not only need a larger breaker due to continuous load conditions, you probably need individual wires run in conduit, vs. Romex.

The terminal connection on a chargepoint is a lever lock terminal strip to the hardwires. I don't think you'll get 4AWG in there.

Changing the cable will cost $200 (they already sell it). So then you have $600 into this unit to make it NACS.
Yeah and? If you are buying this now you presumably have a current EV to use on it and need a J1772 connector. If you are adding an EV with NACS in a couple years you either have a mix of both connector types and will need an adapter for one of the vehicles either way you go or you are upgrading your vehicle every couple years and $200 on a new cable shouldn't be a big deal. You could also use an adapter which are relatively inexpensive if needed.

My new construction house is pre wired for a EV charger with 50 amp breaker. This has too much Amps for my setup?

You would just set the charger to 40 amps. The app asks you what size breaker you have during installation so this will work fine.

I'm getting a Tesla next week, should I get this out the level 2 charger they sell for 500$? I have a 220v outlet
Unless you are doing something industrial in your house, chances are you do *not* have the 220V outlet that you really want for these car chargers. Most residential 220V outlets are 20A max, whereas most level 2 car chargers want a 50A circuit (this one requires at least 40A). In short, you will likely *not* be able to use an existing 220V outlet for this...

Also, my son-in-law just got a Tesla and his big mistake was picking up his Tesla *before* he got the charger installed. His car sat in his garage for days because he literally couldn't charge it enough overnight to even get to work and back. My $.02? If you are getting a Tesla next week, get a charger installed THIS week...

This seems to qualify for a $300 rebate from Portland General Electric but you do have to install it as a hard wired to qualify for the rebate. They do list a hard wire version separately but the description does seem to indicate that this could still be installed as a hard wire. For $150 less it's probably worth a little effort to do that. I just had my JuiceBox installed for the rebate or I'd dig in even further and order this.

Yes.. I got the hardwire version last month and the rebate is already approved..

So I barely realized after plugging it in to my 50 amp that this thing caps at 16 amps because it needs a licensed electrician.
