Read the reviews on the 8ah on the Milwaukee site and take the gamble if you like.

If they're aware of it but they can't be bothered to figure out for themselves how the partial return 'trick' works, don't humor these posts. There are HUNDREDS of past home depot deals it's been discussed in depth..

Would have been quicker to take the respectful route and just answer the question. Internet.

Meh, slickdeals users are really weird about the home depot partial return 'hack' thing. They'll downvote you for talking about it, asking about it, for answering (or for not answering, apparently)...

Bottom line is, it comes up basically every Milwaukee/HD thread, so it's not difficult to figure it out. Empower yourself with knowledge so you don't have to rely on answers from others which may or may not be true.

I've read the 8ah batteries had issues, I'm guessing they used different internal battery cells? That's the only reason I haven't replaced my 6ah ones.

Yes, they're still the same form factor 21700 cells, but of a slightly different composition, and/or manufacturing process. As with other battery cells/types, you have to kind of trade off between max amperage output and overall capacity (Wh) of the cells. Generally, if you do better in one, you do slightly worse in the other as a result. All newer batteries though so they tend to do better than the older gen M18 5.0 & 3.0... but from the reviews it sounds like the cells chosen/used for the 8.0 HO haven't proven quite up to their normal reputation.

I've gotten 1x M18 CP 3.0 HO, 2x 6.0 HO and both of those did really my own tests for overall output (see last paragraph). Those are all the newer 21700 cells. the small/light CP 3.0 HO even ran their M18 track saw which made the same laser-straight and accurate cut as I've come to expect from the Makita 36V (2x 18V) track saw that preceded it.

The same battery improvements apply to their 18650 cells in their M12 lineup, too. Their newer cells (specifically the M12 5.0 & 2.5 HO) use newer/better chemistry/manufacturing & tend to place at/near the top in the overall lineups.

FWIW as far as their battery reputation goes - I have an 5+ yr old 9.0 High Demand pack that has been used with the M18 leaf blower and string trimmer for as many many years.. I tested it in full multiple times recently, it still delivers a good 85%+ of its rated capacity - actual power output as measured by a USB-C meter while using the M18 Top Off inverter's USB-C 45-60W PD (these units are slick).
