Because if you were a teen nerd like me and spent those years on the Internet and on YouTube in particular, you grew up watching people play video games. I think this is why you saw a lot of 20-30 y/o at the movies. This game in particular has "lore" that has been years in the making and we enjoy the break from reality when they release a new game. Now for kids, I think it's more of just a bunch of memes, Roblox mods, etc. it's fun to watch for them, like it was for us. (Still is for me- not so much the Roblox but the regular games)
How scary is it? Just don't want to give the kids nightmares but they never stop talking about this game.
It's probably a bad idea for a 7 year old. 13 is about right. For instance, the ending of sister location involves the main character getting "scooped." Not terribly graphic, but insinuated and may be disturbing.
that said, I'm not sure if that scene was included in the switch version. additionally, there are parts where you have to hide from things (inside a desk, I think?)that are coming to get you. there are a lot of "bad things in the dark" and if you have kids who are naturally afraid of the dark, it might not be a good game for them at the moment. I hope this helped

Your parents didn't understand Goosebumps either, nobody cares that you don't understand the appeal of this.
They did start to emit an odor, but nobody thought to check the suits :p

FNAF is nothing like that. I skipped around a 35 minute YouTube video and there was no gameplay. None. It was just sitting there looking at the same screen.
Yes, we don't "get" the point of a "game" with no gameplay.
Also just because your generation sat around watching *other* people play games doesn't mean that sitting around passively watching FNAF qualifies as you playing a game.
Being raised by the internet fried your generation's brain
