If you're not a frequent credit card player, it's advisable to apply for a no-annual-fee credit card. While credit cards with annual fees can be valuable, they can also be canceled or downgraded. However, for general users, a no-annual-fee credit card can help avoid any burden.
Based on the three points mentioned earlier, the most suitable credit card I can think of is the Citi Custom Cash. Its main advantage is that you can get a 5% cashback if you use it for a specific type of expense, regardless of your spending habits. The current sign-up bonus is probably $200 for spending $1,500. So, after buying the phone, you can spend a bit more to meet the requirements. The highest bonus was $300 for spending $1,000, but it was only available for a limited time when the card was first released. Unfortunately, I didn't apply during that period. Another card to consider is the Chase IHG Traveler, offering points as a bonus for spending $2,000. However, this card doesn't have the highest historical point bonus right now.
For more general recommendations, here are some no-annual-fee cashback cards:
- Bank of America Customized Cash
- Chase Freedom Flex
- American Express Blue Cash Everyday
- Capital One Savor One
- US Bank Cash Plus
These cards are all excellent with no annual fees, and you can choose based on your spending habits. However, keep in mind that some of these cards may have lower spending requirements, like $500 or $1,000, so buying a phone might exceed those limits.Additionally, there are many flat cashback cards that offer a 2% return. For example, the Citi Double Cash card. This card currently seems to have a $200 bonus for spending $1500, making it a good choice. However, for me, a 2% cashback rate is too low, so I usually apply for category-specific cards. But if you don't want to spend too much time on credit cards, the Citi Double Cash is indeed a good option. Since it's unclear which category Spectrum falls into when buying a phone, whether it's considered online shopping or a telecom company, getting a 2% cashback is still good.
I have referral links for some of these cards. If you're planning to apply, you can contact me. Using my link will NOT increase your chances of approval, but it will help me get a reward from the credit card company.
