I do not recommend Spectrum Mobile. They are an MVNO on Verizon towers and when the network is congested, you have little to no connection because your priority is so low. There is also no upgrade option for a prioritized connection. I dropped them after 1 month.
I test with the following tiv samsung phones:

A14 $714
A54 $770
S23fe $880
S23+ $994
Trade in my Google Pixel 6A for $757 that I originally got from metro for $50 years ago. Makes this a true slickdeal 🫡

As long as the IMEI is coming up clean and the device is paid off then it should be fine. The recent issue appears to be related specifically to Walmart not properly scanning devices as being purchased. Since there is no benefit anymore to purchasing online (i.e. no more free double storage) if you can just do it in store then they can just process your trade in at that time and save you from any uncertainty. If you do purchase it online it sounds like Assurant is getting caught up with trade ins and you might just want to keep your new phone in the package in case there is any issue with the trade in.

One potential perk to buying online versus in store is that you can purchase with a credit card online and then have the trade in credit sent to a different card (such as debit), which can have perks in terms of CC rewards. If you purchase in store and they apply the discount immediately then you cannot do this. Several people are now confirming that tax is being refunded with online purchases once the trade in is processed, it does not appear the lower tax thing is really an in store perk.
Does anyone have success getting the store to tax the phone after the $700+ credit? I went to the store last week and was told the tax on the the phone before the credit. They would not take my OnePlus since is not listed. (someone posted on the thread that it is doable if Spectrum employee just enter the IMEI # - not true or the employee I dealt with would not do it) I am still waiting for the Moto G Pure to be delivered by Amazon and will see the break down of the OTD cost.

Seriously? I can't believe they are pulling this crap. Luckily I haven't sent in my trade-in yet as I have till end of this month according to the paper but I'm getting nervous now. The rep said he put in a support ticket for the order for me to still get the upgraded memory phone and wait up to 5 business days but I have my serious doubts and am getting nervous about approaching trade-in deadline. what a mess
My personal opinion would be to only believe them if they honor your original order since the current trade in is linked to your initial order. If they cancel your original order and you send in your trade in then based on what other people are reporting it sounds like you are almost guaranteed a headache trying to get the trade in credit to properly credit. If they create a new order for you with the double memory then they should cancel your original trade in and provide you a new one linked to your new order.

You are lucky in the sense that you did not send in your trade in yet like some others in your situation. Plus, per their regular terms they say you have 30 days for them to receive your trade in and per the pre-order terms the Spectrum website says you have 45 days. I do not think the Assurant system knows the difference, so I am not really sure what happens between 30-45 days.

It sounds like most people's packages that were not mailed out 1-2 weeks ago are now getting processed quicker. Some people said they sent in on 2/1 and it was marked as received 2/3-2/5. It sounds like most delays were related to some truckloads that USPS did not scan at delivery, of which mine was one.

If you do it in store, it sounds like most people are only being charged tax for the total after the $700+trade in is subtracted. It sounds like most people who are doing mail in are being refunded the tax when the credit is posted. Some people have said it depends what state you live in, but I am not sure what state laws would apply to cause Spectrum to handle it differently for different states.

Today is day 14 from purchase date for me. Moto g play from Walmart store was picked up from USPS by Assurant, but trade in website still says in transit. Unlikely that it will be reviewed today so I'm hoping the trade-in doesn't get canceled. IMEI was "green" on straight talk's website so I've done everything I could... Fingers crossed

Agree, aside from the USPS issue (i.e. USPS not scanning delivery and Assurant not scanning as received) everything went smoothly like last year. Last year I did S23 a bit after launch when they were offering a $600 bonus credit. I noticed it after I found out that I had 12 months free mobile with my internet. I ordered and received the S23 the next day and sent the trade in that day. The trade in tracked correctly with USPS and was received a few days later and processed within 1 day. Credit hit the day after. Purchased with CC and sent back credit via debit. Seamless (except having to coordinate with FedEx due to the signature requirement for delivery).

This year the only thing that got me worried was USPS stopped tracking movement and people here started reporting issues with trade ins being denied. I was not too concerned about Assurant ultimately receiving my device but was concerned if my trade in was denied. Spectrum customer service is terrible in terms of fixing issues. If things go smoothly in their system, fine, but I have had bad experience with anything that deviates even slightly. That is what got me worried this go around.

But aside from the USPS delay, great. Double storage with the preorder and tax automatically refunded with the credit.

The only other difference is with the S23 I was able to get it unlocked immediately at the same time I requested by credit. With the S24 they are now saying 60 days. So for those actually planning to use the phone, I think this means you cannot do dual SIM mode with another carrier for the first 60 days.
I had a trade in credit for $5 so they only credited $705..am in CA, this means i didnt receive the tax correct?

BTW, I found out my order canceled as they backout CC transaction, otherwise no other communication order is canceled. My trade-in processed and they didn't credit to the account, makes sense as the order is not fulfilled. I will have to see how to get new order placed with 512GB upgrade and tie it in to original trade-in.

Looks like they refund tax for trade in as well, at least in FL. My trade in was accepted at $705 (iphone 6s) yesterday, I then see credit of $757.88 (7.5% tax included) in my account billing today.

same, was quoted for $705 but got $768 back in account

Traded S23 for S24 at a nearby store earlier today. Since trade in value exceeds the total cost of the phone including tax, I thought I would get overage in my account but I don't see anything in my account. Is anyone in the similar situation?

Spectrum chat told me "If Assurant does not update by the 9th, I would recommend contacting us again if you would like to return the device." And of course you'll have to pay $50 re-stocking fee, and you will not get your old phone back.

As arbitrager noted the credit amount will say the $700+trade in but when you actually get the credit on the account is when you would see the tax added back on.

Not sure about in store with this subject, but you should receive the full credit amount. With Assurant, the credit did not reflect on my account until the next day so possibly if you just did it today then your online account might just not be reflecting it yet. Does your receipt show that you should be getting a credit for the full amount? That is nice deal when it works out that your profit from the upgrade!

Every state is different California unfortunately doesn't get the tax back.

If you mailed your device and it just appears stuck in TX due to USPS not updating, then odds are in your favor that it should be processed based on the updates everybody has been having this week. The Spectrum website does say preorders have 45 days for Assurant to receive the device (even though Assurant system says 30).

So even with in store trade ins they charge the full tax amount? That sucks, at least you can rest in peace knowing that CA will be putting your taxes to good use, such as providing healthcare to illegal immigrants or providing needles to homeless heroin addicts.
