I know there are a lot of fans of the Lx-505, the Onkyo, and the similar integra models. After months trying when they were all released I managed to get the Pioneer. I was replacing an x4100 Denon in a 5.1.4 setup. I built the room for high quality sound and to spec with Atmos, DTS-X, and Auro 3D.

I even bought the higher end tuning mic for Dirac and the special mic stand. I got deep into all of the tuning curves, laptop software, and all that jazz well before actually getting the receiver. For months I combed AV forums to get tips and expert advice.

In the end, in spite of days of tuning and tweaks, I returned the Pioneer. The Pioneer's sound was just flat compared to my older Denon. The 3 dimensions of sound were just 2D and too crisp. I thought for sure I got a defective Pioneer and after returning it, continued searching obsessively for any one of these three extremely similar models.

I was on the Crutchfield waitlist for a few months and finally got the Onkyo. I hooked it up. Did all the initial, standard calibration but got the exact same result. I did the curves and tweaked and tweaked. Things changed but never got close to my older Denon. Just flat sound that made me sad. I ended up returning the Onkyo too. It killed my soul.

So now I have the Denon x4700. It sounds amazing like my x4100 but a little better. The new Denon has some features my old Denon did not and that were critical at my house - having volume control on-screen and being able to turn everything on and off with a simple remote.

I'm not arguing with all the people who love these receivers. On paper they look awesome. My experience was less than awesome, but what pleases people's ears is ultimately a very personal experience and wanted to share mine.

That being said. This Pioneer is still a quality receiver and at this price definitely a slick deal. But I'll warn you not to invest as much time as I did trying to tweak it if you aren't impressed after your first calibration. Tweaking helped but in my case did not work out.

Hard to imagine a 30 year AV hobbyist that never tried using external amps with an AVR.

I live in apartment with no proper theater room , want to use this in living room 5.1.2 will this be overkill for my def tech 9000 series? One more qq my neighbors doesn't like onkyo calibrations buuzzz white noise does Dirac make same buzzz noise or something different like Denon ?
It makes the various tones, yes.

Can't they stomach it for a few minutes? Usually, it's calibrate it and forget it.

Or just do it when they're at work (assuming they go into the office).

I have a super budget energy. Take classic 5.1 system that I want to upgrade in the future, and I'm buying a new receiver and want to make sure it's future proof. Would this be a good one that can still drive my current system?

Same boat. Literally hooked everything up an hour ago. I realize I can "google it" but what's your reasoning for dropping another $100 and grabbing the 505?

For mostly music and some TV watching what's the best receiver in this range? I doubt I will ever get beyond maybe adding the side speakers. I'm also surprised that there's no wifi on these? I guess I can just use my TV as audio source for online music apps but...

My front speakers are the Polk LSIM I got from a SD deal.

Returns valid for 30 days. But you have to fork out the shipping fees. They will give you UPS shipping label at a discounted rate. But because AVRs are heavy, it may run you close to $50 for the return (varies based on your location)

Picked up this AVR a while back for $699. Seems like a great deal on paper and would prob be fine for 80% of setups. I did read a review about wattage throttling on an AVR forum that scared me away, plus lack of zones and crossover made me think I would regret it.

Also, did a head to head with the Denon 3800 and 4800, just preferred the Denon at BB. Would suggest trying them both out if you're torn between the two.

Yes. And you should. It's apples and oranges. Audyssey xt32 is the equivalent to Dirac. You'd have to get the X3xxx series to get that level of Audyssey.
My downstairs theater has a Denon X3400 with the Audyssey xt32 room correction, but it's an entirely different animal down there. I run separates for the amp section - Parasound and Adcom amps on that system. I also have Klipsch Chorus II, Forte II and Academy for my speakers.

The theater room with the XT32 and the Livingroom with basic Dirac are worlds apart. Room correction is cool and all, but I think ultimately speakers, speaker placement, room treatment and proper amplification make more difference. The Pioneer was a nice and affordable upgrade for my Livingroom Klipsch Reference Premier system.

This receiver is amazing, I have it running my Klipsch 5.2.2 Atmos setup and can add 2 or 4 more speakers. 2 without adding an amp, or 4 if I add a 2 channel amp. I was thinking to go 5.2.4 with this Pioneer, or get crazy (lol) and go 7.2.4 with a small 2 channel amp. I really like the Dirac Live as compared to the Denon's basic Audyssey that was on my AVR-S930 for room correction. My wife will not let me add ceiling speakers to our living room so I am doing up-firing Atmos for now. I think you are lucky with the 4 ceiling speakers, I say go for this. By the way this model is more comparative to the Onkyo TX-RZ50, just look at a photo of the back of these two models and you will notice they are identical.
Was wondering what crossover you're putting atmos speakers at since it's a global crossover. I have Atmos up firing speakers as well. The frequency range for mine starts around 150 hz. So according to a lot of people one could harm their speakers or the AVR if they don't crossover near the frequency that the up firing speakers start at. But with that you're not hearing much range from your main speakers. Most Atmos enabled speakers start at a high frequency. What's your opinion about this? Do your Atmos speakers have a frequency range that starts at a high frequency?
