I know there are a lot of fans of the Lx-505, the Onkyo, and the similar integra models. After months trying when they were all released I managed to get the Pioneer. I was replacing an x4100 Denon in a 5.1.4 setup. I built the room for high quality sound and to spec with Atmos, DTS-X, and Auro 3D.

I even bought the higher end tuning mic for Dirac and the special mic stand. I got deep into all of the tuning curves, laptop software, and all that jazz well before actually getting the receiver. For months I combed AV forums to get tips and expert advice.

In the end, in spite of days of tuning and tweaks, I returned the Pioneer. The Pioneer's sound was just flat compared to my older Denon. The 3 dimensions of sound were just 2D and too crisp. I thought for sure I got a defective Pioneer and after returning it, continued searching obsessively for any one of these three extremely similar models.

I was on the Crutchfield waitlist for a few months and finally got the Onkyo. I hooked it up. Did all the initial, standard calibration but got the exact same result. I did the curves and tweaked and tweaked. Things changed but never got close to my older Denon. Just flat sound that made me sad. I ended up returning the Onkyo too. It killed my soul.

So now I have the Denon x4700. It sounds amazing like my x4100 but a little better. The new Denon has some features my old Denon did not and that were critical at my house - having volume control on-screen and being able to turn everything on and off with a simple remote.

I'm not arguing with all the people who love these receivers. On paper they look awesome. My experience was less than awesome, but what pleases people's ears is ultimately a very personal experience and wanted to share mine.

That being said. This Pioneer is still a quality receiver and at this price definitely a slick deal. But I'll warn you not to invest as much time as I did trying to tweak it if you aren't impressed after your first calibration. Tweaking helped but in my case did not work out.

Hard to imagine a 30 year AV hobbyist that never tried using external amps with an AVR.

Was wondering what crossover you're putting atmos speakers at since it's a global crossover. I have Atmos up firing speakers as well. The frequency range for mine starts around 150 hz. So according to a lot of people one could harm their speakers or the AVR if they don't crossover near the frequency that the up firing speakers start at. But with that you're not hearing much range from your main speakers. Most Atmos enabled speakers start at a high frequency. What's your opinion about this? Do your Atmos speakers have a frequency range that starts at a high frequency?
I have read one of the biggest cons of this receiver vs. the Onkyo tx-rz50 is the global crossover. Since I am running 2 subs - 2 12" Klipsch ones, I don't worry about pushing low frequencies from my speakers. I set my speakers to 'small' and run Dirac and the system sounds fantastic. My Klipsch Atmos speakers have a crossover network that only sends the lower frequencies to the woofers and the highs to the tweeters.

According to the Klipsch manual, the recommended crossover frequency for the RP140 (atmos) is 150 Hz. If you are using the speakers as rear or side surrounds instead of as Dolby Atmos speakers, set the crossover to 80 Hz.

I am thinking about getting the RP-500SA II Dolby Atmos surround sound speakers because they feature a switchable crossover that changes between Dolby Atmos and Dolby Surround modes for optimized performance in any configuration. My assumption is that the switch controls the crossover frequency.

So I'm trying to understand. Forgive me as I'm not an audiophile. So you put yours at 150?

..I wish they made a separate component you could use to set different crossovers.

Well depends whether you need the preouts on the 505, extra processing & 20 more watts.
Keep in mind the Pioneers(305/505) have global crossovers & their preouts are not all assignable.

Here is a comparsion of the two to see all the differences.

Do you see any reason to upgrade from a Marantz Sr6011 to this? Using all 11 channels(with an emotiva amp) on it in a 7.2.4 configuration and I am quite happy with it. Unsure marantz 6011 to this is an upgrade except that this is newer and with more tech, hence the question. Also, have been wanting to try Dirac live since it came out.

I think it's why Klipsch decided to build a switchable crossover into their newer Atmos speakers, both the Klipsch rp-500sa and rp-500sa II have this feature so you can choose to use as surrounds or up firing atmos. Probably 80 Hz (surround) or 150 Hz (up firing) switch. Since the Pioneer has a global crossover and I want my main 5 LCR and Rears to sound good I set my Pioneer global to 80 Hz. The subs handle below 80 Hz. I am unsure what my Klipsch RP-140 Atmos speakers start at, the amp sends them 80 Hz, since there is not a switch I am guessing they are between 80 Hz and 150 Hz for a starting point. Maybe someone else knows what the crossover starts at on these Atmos speakers?

Hdmi 2.1 is probably numero uno for me. If you dont have consoles then this shouldnt matter all too much.

I do have consoles, but don't use them as much. Sound quality is most important for me over everything else, and I like it warm. Have a denon too, but like the warmth and tonality of the marantz better. Never owned/listened to a pioneer, and hence would like to know(wanna try Dirac for how much better the room correction/calibration could get over audyssey for movie content)

Wow. Took some time to find the rp-140 sa info. The recommended minimum Crossover for it is 150hz according to Klipsch. I don't see anything about using them as surrounds but here's the manual for all of the Klipsch rp:

Man you got me reading, lol. So the configuration you select during setup (5.2.2, 5.1, 7.2.4 etc.) plus the Dirac calibration will control which frequencies are sent to which speakers.

Read this: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/...37/page-13

And this: https://www.audiosciencereview.co...011/page-3

So I looked at my Dirac 'curtains' and my Atmos speakers are controlled by Dolby standard settings it says 'Filter cannot be applied to Dolby Enabled Speaker'.. I noticed my larger LR are lower crossover (28Hz), my Center is a little higher (31Hz) and my surrounds are a little higher (45Hz).

Why does it seem like each receiver has one glaring missing feature that keeps it from being the perfect receiver? I was just about to pull the trigger on this until I read the complaints about it having universal crossover.

What equipment and AVR do you have? Those crossovers almost seem pointless tbh.

I'll check those links out, but are you sure you configured your arrangement? ie 5.1.4, 7.1.2 etc. on your AVR. (And on dirac) that's what it sounds like if dirac doesn't see it.
