I know there are a lot of fans of the Lx-505, the Onkyo, and the similar integra models. After months trying when they were all released I managed to get the Pioneer. I was replacing an x4100 Denon in a 5.1.4 setup. I built the room for high quality sound and to spec with Atmos, DTS-X, and Auro 3D.

I even bought the higher end tuning mic for Dirac and the special mic stand. I got deep into all of the tuning curves, laptop software, and all that jazz well before actually getting the receiver. For months I combed AV forums to get tips and expert advice.

In the end, in spite of days of tuning and tweaks, I returned the Pioneer. The Pioneer's sound was just flat compared to my older Denon. The 3 dimensions of sound were just 2D and too crisp. I thought for sure I got a defective Pioneer and after returning it, continued searching obsessively for any one of these three extremely similar models.

I was on the Crutchfield waitlist for a few months and finally got the Onkyo. I hooked it up. Did all the initial, standard calibration but got the exact same result. I did the curves and tweaked and tweaked. Things changed but never got close to my older Denon. Just flat sound that made me sad. I ended up returning the Onkyo too. It killed my soul.

So now I have the Denon x4700. It sounds amazing like my x4100 but a little better. The new Denon has some features my old Denon did not and that were critical at my house - having volume control on-screen and being able to turn everything on and off with a simple remote.

I'm not arguing with all the people who love these receivers. On paper they look awesome. My experience was less than awesome, but what pleases people's ears is ultimately a very personal experience and wanted to share mine.

That being said. This Pioneer is still a quality receiver and at this price definitely a slick deal. But I'll warn you not to invest as much time as I did trying to tweak it if you aren't impressed after your first calibration. Tweaking helped but in my case did not work out.

Hard to imagine a 30 year AV hobbyist that never tried using external amps with an AVR.

Those buckeye amps are overpriced. Just get a crown xls if you want excellent class d that would please an audiophile. They actually come in a plug-and-play case and have digital EQ.
Which Crown amp do you own? What speakers are you powering with it?

I'm a newbie with all the sound systems and av receivers. Would this be an overkill for Jamo S 809? I would like a Dirac live system. Not sure if I should get the LX305 or the LX505 for extra $100.

Thanks, Charley! I've seen these and always wondered if they can "get the job done." I'm not an audiophile and, while I'm extremely grateful to the other suggestions here by others, I'm hard pressed to buy an amp that is either more expensive or close to the cost of the receiver itself. All to power a few auxiliary speakers for effect.

It wouldn't hurt to try this and see the results. If it doesn't work out, it's not much of a loss!
You have nothing to worry about, especially buying through eBay and PayPal. I bought an expensive 200$ amp prior to findng out about fosi's the thing was an oven and the quality was worse! Now I have this many amp sitting on top of my receiver and it's always cool as can be even in use 👍 you can see all kinds of people all over audioholics and lots of other audio file channels talking about these little class D amplifiers they are the truth, not to worry. I would grab that used one for 35 but you can grab a new one for $45 on Amazon after coupon https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Audio-Amplifier-Receiver-Integrated/dp/B076XSBCCL/ref=sr_1_82?crid=... [amazon.com]
theres also the brand Ayama I like Fosi more. There's dozens of people on Amazon in the reviews and questions and answers talking about how they use these little amps for this exact purpose.

It's a very very simple thing. You hook it up turn the volume to less than halfway, run Audyssey, and then likely turning the treble up a tad, and then you're all set you'll never have to touch it or think about it again. It pretty much won't use any watts if there isn't sound going through it 👍

It would be overkill in the sense that you will be paying for things you won't use or need(ie extra channels).

If you're after Dirac Live the 305 is the least expensive way to get it.

The only real thing the 505 adds are the pre outs which again would be something you'd pay for and not use/need.

Great price on this. Needed this for wireless rear speaker setup (individual channel pre-outs and SoundPath)
Which ones did you get? I'm looking for a similar setup.

And of course I just received my LX305 the other day when the 505 wasn't on-sale. How is Adorama's return policy?
I returned a full set of Jamo speakers after trying them. Free of charge.

Is it worth it to upgrade from the vsx-lx503 to the vsx-lx505?

Really want to pull the trigger but every time I read about the power throttling and global crossover, I chicken out. I have a 7.2.4 set up with emotiva airmotiv speakers and I am pretty sure they are 4 ohms. Not sure if this will work....
I had the same reservations and almost overpaid for the RZ50. But, after countless forums, reviews and videos I found out the global crossover is a non-issue if you use Dirac Live from PC/Mac... and why wouldn't you... it's included. You can get even better results with a UMIK-1 mic for $100 direct from MiniDSP. I got one used on FBMP. But last night I also ordered the Monoprice Monolith M5100X 5x90W dedicated amp for LRC and the 2nd Atmos heights to get to 7.1*3.4. I was going to get another 2ch amp just for 2nd heights, but wanted one with 12V trigger so it turns on/off automatically... but $150 wasn't far from the M5100X $390 sale price on Amazon. And that extra $240 gets me dedicated amps for LRC. I likely don't *need* it... but I figure I spent this much in a weekend on really dumb things when I was younger, so what the hell. 😜

Without the extra stuff... $650 for this receiver w/ 3yr warranty is an insanely awesome price.

Why would I? I never needed more power. I always had typical 6-8ohm speakers of moderate sensitivity in a typical sized living room that my AVR had no trouble powering. My last four AVR's (1 Marantz and 3 denons) in my main system had preouts. Never used them. I also always had a subwoofer that takes a lot of load off your main speakers. My very first credit card was from HiFi Buys in ATL in the early 90's. Lol. I've had more AVR's, speakers, Tv's, projectors, and subwoofers through my systems than any person should ever have. 🤣🤣🤣 I still own the cabinet from a $1200 velodyne servo sub I bought back in the early 90's. The amp died and the driver is crap without the servo technology, so I used the cabinet to make a new DIY sub.
I never did prior either... but I ordered this LX505 and Monolith 5x90WPC amp. Initially I just wanted one for 2nd heights w/ 12V trigger, but the M5100X was on sale. I can use it for LCR and 2nd heights now.

So, I joined that club. And most videos I watch are people doing external amps too. This AVR works wonderful with or without an amp depending on your needs. Different people have different needs. To each their own. Enjoy your journey and share what works for you and maybe learn some things from others. It's an awesome hobby.

Yes for me it was the preamp outs and 11 channel processing to get 7.x.4.

I've had this receiver since launch and love it. I recently went with a Buckeye Amps 3 channel for my LCR. I'm still only running 5.2.4, but it sounds awesome. So much power all around now. https://www.buckeyeamp.com/shop/a.../3_channel
Monoprice Monolith 5x90wpc w/ 12V trigger. Get LCR and heights for 7.x.4

"And most videos I watch are people doing external amps too. "

I don't doubt you. The vast majority people buying an avr for their home stereo or home theater don't "make videos" about it. Enthusiasts DO "make videos". Enthusiasts view this not as a necessity (a means to an end), but a hobby. Like you. Enthusiasts, whether it's bicycles, hunting, or home theaters, often go all-in on a hobby and buy all kinds of potentially useless accessories. Put me in that camp too. Lol. It's makes them happy. It their big boy/girl toys. Cool. I'm 100% in favor of that.

I've had separate amps back when I had to because I was using a preamp. I've had home theater systems for over 30 yrs and never had a need for extra amplification beyond the avr I was using at the time.
People either need to know for a fact that they NEED the external amplification due to their speakers' requirements, room size, etc, and their avr isn't currently cutting it, or they know they're just doing it for the fun of it.

That's all I'm saying. Have fun! ✌🏼

If I have this receiver, why can't I just connect my 5.1 speakers to this? Why do I need amp? Would appreciate if some expert care to explain. I have never used an amp nor do I understand what it does, but have always connected my speakers to my receiver. Am I missing something here by not getting an amp?
