I went through three x700s that all froze or showed corrupted video roughly halfway through a number of 4k discs. These same 4k discs would then play fine on a XBox One X. I always assumed it was just some layer transition issue that seemed to be fairly common with Sony players based on how many times I saw other people complain of similar issues.

After giving up on Sony, I went with the "fan favorite" Panasonic UB820. I haven't had any issues with it, and it just generally looks better with both 4K discs and upscaling standard blu-rays. Also something to keep in mind with the UB820 is that it's one of the Panasonic players that lets you bypass some region locks on Region B/C discs.
I've had this 4k Blu-Ray player since 2018. My experience has mostly been good. One note: this player has an automatic sleep mode after 15 or 20 minutes. As far as I know, it can't be disabled. This winds up being really annoying if you pause a show or movie that doesn't read where you left off watching. Breaking Bad on Blu-Ray is one example.
This isn't a fix. I had this player, followed these instructions, and still had issues.

These players are just very hit or miss, some are good, others aren't.

If you buy, play some 4k discs during your return window and make sure ya got a good one

I have two of these Sony 4k players in my home and love the quality of the picture and sound. With the HDMI cable going straight to my Yamaha receiver, then to my TV, the sound is OUTSTANDING!!!

On that note, I tried to connect the HDMI out 1 from the Blu-Ray player straight into the TV, then the HDMI 2 into my receiver. I get the picture but no sound. I set the Blu-Ray player Audio to HDMI 2 but still did not work.

It seems like the receiver will not switch to the audio in, from the player. I'm really stump with this and do not know a solution. Any help is much appreciated!!

BTW, TV is a LG C1 and receiver is a Yamaha TSR-700.
Connect the eArc HDMI from the TV to the receiver's eArc HDMI and then connect the blu ray to the receiver. It's unclear what purpose is served by the dual HDMI out on the blu ray player.

Yes, right indeed. Poor attempt and big fail since you contribute to high prices! Ha ha SMH !

If everyone waited, prices would be much cheaper.

For now, 4K Blurays only make sense if one already wants or has a PS5 or compatible XB imo.

Early adoption followed by a steady stream of purchasers is what allows prices to eventually fall while ensuring it makes financial sense to continue to manufacture the players and discs. And prices have already fallen dramatically. Prices haven't fallen as far and as quickly as they did for Blu-ray and DVD because there's a smaller pool of people still buying physical discs.

Everybody sitting on the sidelines waiting for prices to fall to fire sale prices, like you suggest, is what eventually results in a format's demise. If I can afford it, I'd rather pay a little more and enjoy something today or in the short term than wait for who knows how long for things to get even cheaper, and potentially indirectly contribute to the end of physical media altogether.

I think you meant "...then connect the blu ray to the TV" and not receiver -- right? That is how I have mine connected since my receiver doesn't support 4k video but my TV does. If your 4k television didn't have eARC, then you would need to use both HDMI outputs (or the coax digital audio out).

The duel hdmi out is for older receivers that can't pass thru 4k. One cable to tv for 4k video and the other cable to the receiver for audio. This is how I have mine setup. No need at all for a cable between tv and receiver.

I bought a refurb on amazon back in Sept 2021 for $147. Has performed flawlessly. I did have an issue with it turning on by itself but that was easily fixed by turning off hdmi control on the player- I use a Harmony remote so don't need the hdmi control feature. The turning on itself was annoying since this is in my bedroom and I would hear the loaded disk spin up in the middle of the night.

Arc/eArc was created to solve this problem. With the blu-ray sent to one of the TV's hdmi inputs and the TV's Arc connected to a receiver, audio should flow appropriately and there is never a need for a device to have dual-out to the same system. Exception would be if your audio-processor has no Audio Return Channel at all (but pretty much every receiver made in the past 12 years has this, and almost all TVs since then as well) *OR* it can't pass the HDMI to the TV. As it happens, I had that exact Yamaha receiver for a while and know that it has both Arc and 4K passthrough. So while his setup should work on paper, it's a very odd way to do things.

I've been pretty happy for this unit. I purchased one used off ebay for around $100 years ago. 4K output and sound are great. I also like the fact this can basically play any type of disc. For the price I can put up with the cheapness until prices drop.

The menu is slow. The sleep timeout is annoying. Didn't even know about the DV setting until now so that sucks. I also used it to display art. I put some HQ images on a USB drive and plugged it in the front and ran it as a slideshow. Worked surprisingly well.

If you're looking for that long term device and money is not an issue, I would probably go with a Panasonic. Sony seemed to have lost their touch on these players. I would be curious to see if Sony's higher end units are better.

I worry about spending $500 on a 4K player if I can't get the media in the future. That said, I have a really nice system that would do it justice. Is Dolby Vision the only major difference between the ub420 and ub820?

I've read some reviews, but not a direct comparison that shows how much better the ub820 is.

I'd hate to pick up a cheap 4K UHD player and not be much better off than my current Blu-ray player. on the other hand, if I can't tell the difference for $300 more, that could buy a lot of 4K discs.

1st off a cheap 4k UHD player is much better than a Blu-ray player.

Having compared(currently own both) 820 vs 420, performance wise they are the same minus DV of course.
820 does have analog outs and a few more settings 99.99% of us won't need/use.

I also compared them to Sony 700/800, LG, Xbox.
Overall Panasonic was best with all 3 disc content.

With DV Panasonic was still better but wasn't a big difference.
The quality of your display makes a bigger difference.

DV vs HDR is a lot more complicated because the quality of the transfer of the movie & display and the tone mapping HDR plays a significant role here.
Overall Panasonic was still better here and some cases it was obvious.

Upscaling BR/DVD Panasonic overall easily the best.

Now if you can live with manual on/off DV and gamble you don't get/have the known issues with Sony.
Sony is worth the savings difference imo.

The other savings option is give up DV and get all the other benefits of the 820.

My two cents from personal comparison.

Well, I have over 100 SACD's and they are still being released today. The format is not dead and I enjoy the way they sound. If you didn't buy into it that's fine. I was just suggesting others who may play SACDs on this player to read the post.

My setup is all digital, I'll probably leave the analog outs of the 820 for those missing their Oppo. I may never know if I'd miss DV on the 10% of my discs that support it. I have a friend with a UB820 that I might try to audition during the 420's return period.

Too many other factors in my system to want to diag issues from the Sony, even if they are rare.

Yeah, believe it or not there were people here on this planet before your generation showed up and we created all this technology for you and there's literally hundreds of billions of blu-rays out there and we're not of your instant gratification Spotify world where we've got favorite movies that we have on a library that we want to see in the best possible source and streaming won't do that. Sorry
I'm on "your side" but you're way off in thinking this is a "your generation" thing for the whippersnappers. I started pulling DVDs and BR discs from my collection as I replaced them with 4K titles and put them in boxes to donate... but first offered offered these bunches of BR discs to two 50+ friends for free plus shipping. One guy has a 2y/o and a 6y/o and would be the perfect recipient of the two dozen kids' movies in the pile. But in both cases they simply didn't want them, they both basically said even a few bucks to ship them 20 or so free movies wasn't worth it to them. The one with the kiddos said he "didn't want the clutter".
