Picked it up to replace a Denon X2500 and can't get it past the ARC check. Unit hangs at "Checking ARC Connection.." using the same cable and connection that worked flawlessly with the Denon. Ordered some new "8K" HDMI cables off Amazon and hoping that fixes it. I'm used to using a single remote (Google TV) to control the TV/AVR power and this sucks. Unit sounds pretty awesome and would hate to send it back if I can't get HDMI CEC/ARC to play nice.

Is the difference between this and the Onkyo TX-NR7100 primarily personal brand preference?

There are just a few slight differences like : THX cert, global crossovers,1 extra 2.1, jitter reduction.
Here is a feature comparison that is more comprehensive.

Is there any difference in this and the 505 besides the extra two channels, really? I was waiting for a 505 but my needs are very basic. I just want good sound on a 5.1 system.

The 505 has pre-outs. Receivers have needed to be $1000 to have pre-outs but a lot of price fluxations lately and we had the 505 for $650. Pre-outs are very important to question right now before you buy.

1) How big is your room. 2) How loud do you listen.

If you have a massive room with double height ceilings you are trying to fill sound in with thundering home theatre bliss, you might need pre-outs, which lets you use an additional amplifier to add more power to the system. Louder sound = more power. I can say from personal experience in my 16x30 room with 9 foot ceilings, the 305 is plenty. I don't ever max out the volume.

I get such bad lag switching between inputs when using an Nvidia Shield. Just a heads up for everyone, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna return it.
Just to update everyone. I bought a CEC less HDMI adapter. Signal dropout still occurred, within 5 minutes at that. My next attempt will be to use an HDMI switch. Because the Firestick is essentially on...forever, I think the fact that it's sending a signal to the Pioneer is the issue. An hdmi switch should probably work as it'll prevent any signal at all reaching it. But this now seems more of a receiver software issue than anything.

Also, something I noticed that isn't too big of a deal is that when you set the Dialogue setting to +3 or higher, it reduces the subwoofer level by 30%. Not sure why as it is transferring center channel to the L/R.

Just the Pioneer but I would assume they work the same since they are owned by the same company. But yes taking out the firestick helps, just wish I can keep it plugged in lol

I ditched the fire stick and got chrome cast and use the TV's prime video app.

I would have liked to continue using the stick but it was more problem than help

I fixed this by connecting the shield/firestick directly to the TV and then using eARC to get full audio capabilities to the receiver. Fixed everything with no loss in audio quality.

Unfortunately, my TV only ARC, so I'll have to deal with the limitations. Seems better than nothing though as I really love the system. Thanks!
