I love train watching, I love trains! I hate to be a negative Nelly here.

I live near the Lorton station in Virginia. I see the long lines of folks waiting to get their car loaded, sit and wait, sit and wait, car line often so long it spills outside onto a local road causing traffic issues. Lorton station does have a nice waiting area building.

But beware auto-train is often late, part of reason is passenger trains giving the right of way to freight traffic on the journey. Read the reviews, only a 2.5 rating on TripAdvisor. My neighbor had a bad experience taking the auto train recently, not all food services rendered, got a small refund he was not happy with, wrote to Amtrak about it.

One reviewer said this: "I took the train in Coach from Lorton to VA in Jan and have a return trip planned in a few weeks. The only reason to take this train is to avoid driving. Don't take this train for "an experience" or for "dining options" or for "expediency". ""

But I do love trains! Nothing will derail me, I will stay on track with my hobby watching them and sometimes riding them. =|=|=|=|=|=|=
Do you want to let your car experience a train ride or not?
A compact SUV from Avis in Tampa is $355/week, or about $50/day. Even a compact is $260. I think you are living pre-2020 with your estimates.

Has anyone been able to put a deal together? What sort of pricing are you seeing?

I'm trying to get a spring break trip together using this, and am coming up with the following out of PHL:

2 adults, 2 kids
$366 departing on March 29
$594 returning on April 6.

If the car fee is $250 each way, we're looking at about $1,500. A far cry from $39 / passenger times 8.

Anyone else having luck out there?

This is pretty neat, I never knew that a train provided a service to move your vehicle. I'm going to assume that motorcycles are also included and if so ,would they allow multiple mc's in the same train car charging the same price as one car or truck. Would I have to buy a seat can I just rent the train car to transport the bike? Im thinking Daytona bike week or just plan a trip/vaca to FL and it be excellent way to transport the bike and I can fly etc.

When you add fees and everything it's a lot more than $20/day. I'm in orlando now and the cheapest car I could find after taxes fees and insurance was $360 for 7 days. Flights for 5 of us from New York totaled $700, so $1,060 total. This deal would have definitely saved us money.
Did you forget side bonus of being jailed for 30-35 hours ? So, yeah considering 7 day trip will actually be 3 days in the train its just 4 days worth of car rental Smilie but again time is not equal to money for all.

I always get excited about this deal (about a 100 minute drive from the Sanford station), and I try to find a destination and dates that make sense annnnd... no luck. With how little time off we get a year, flying being *cheaper* just makes it difficult to plan. But one day I'll think I'll manage to do the Charleston trip at least. Last time we went there was Ice and that Charleston did not seem to know how to operate or open things during ice haha.
I really wish we had a better train system. If they get more of Brightline built, and somehow at all affordable, it might all click.

Maybe one day, after we're long gone. Unfortunately the govt will screw it up even more. Then people like me who prefer to drive everywhere they can (who, yes I realize Brightline isn't for) won't use it. Plus here in Orlando mass transit sucks so like you said unless the price drops significantly tickets + having to rideshare/taxi everywhere when you get to your destination kills it. The time savings vs driving doesn't help Brightline either. I'd love for Florida to finally get some sort of passenger rail system going. Less people on the road is better for me and others that prefer to drive or just have too much crap that doesn't or can't go on a train. Even deal for this thread wouldn't do me any good as my pickup qualifies as an oversized vehicle so price last time I checked was significant. I can drive to VA AND have all the crap I "need" while paying for diesel and price wise it's cheaper or close enough that it doesn't matter.

I would love for you to link us to a rate near Orlando for $20 a day.

I realize AutoTrain is more for convenience, but the drive itself can be done in a reasonable single day for under $150 (assuming 20MPG and $3/gal for gas). At the cheapest, AutoTrain will be $270 for a single passenger + standard vehicle.

Yea we always go back n forth on doing it.
We drove from nj to disney last august in our model y and it was $95 in charging each way and we made it there in one day.

Our friends do the train since they dont fly so thats their only option, they think we are crazy to drive.

With flights so high now its a cheaper (but longer) option i guess for older people that cant do the drive in one shot if u compare to someone who'd have to break it up with a hotel
