For people like myself that are tired of paying for too many streaming services but like the convenience of opening an app to play my media, I use this drive to rip my DVDs, Blu Rays, and UHD Blu ray and store the media on a NAS to watch on JellyFin.
No. I have a drive, obviously a very old drive, that plays HD DVD but it's an IDE connection. I ended up using one of those devices that can hook up a drive externally and ripped all my HD DVD movies that I wanted to keep, and said a fond farewell to that format forever... and now I have a box full of HD DVD movies and two players that just get older and older.

I just want to know, who is buying this in 2024, and what are you doing with it?
Not trolling, just honestly curious about physical media.
Maybe you're backing up home movies, maybe you have years of tv shows you want to store on blu-ray, I don't know.
I'm getting back into buying Blu rays because streaming services keep getting more restrictive and expensive.
I remember about 14 years ago Netflix was awesome, and definitely seemed like the future. I was able to watch almost any movie I wanted in HD for an awesome low price. The catalog of old movies was huge, and the rating system worked really well.
Suddenly I began noticing that my saved movies were unavailable, the rating system got worse until it became useless, and the price began increasing. I kept hearing how the catalog was expanding, but those "titles" seemed to be garbage zombie movies made as college projects.
Now in present day my old favorites are spread across various expensive streaming platforms, and the rating systems are absolutely useless. I'm just going to buy the stuff I want on Blu Ray and I'll know it's available when I want it.
Edit: It was pointed out that the link above takes you to an adaptor without external power. Apparently Amazon changed the product link from the one I actually bought in my order history. For this drive, you'll need an adaptor with external power supply, but it will work without needing to buy a whole external enclosure. I think this one would work, and if it doesn't you can always return to Amazon. https://a.co/d/e8W22s7

I just did so with the WH16NS40. Went to the MakeMKV forums and did some research, reading, and downloading to make sure I got everything right and so that I didn't brick my drive. All in all maybe an hours worth of effort and now I'm ripping my UHD discs with no issues
What features do you lose when downgrading the firmware?
Might be cheaper / better options out there.
I don't know how speeds compare and what you can get for max write speeds when using USB interface.
I don't have experience doing this with USB-C (might be cheaper and use fewer cables) but he absolute cheapest way I have experience with would be to get a sata-to-usb cable for the connection. For powering the drive, someone can either buy an extension cable that goes from the desktop PC's power supply and route it outside the desktop case to the drive, or use a spare power supply separate from the main PC power supply and connect it directly to the drive. A ghetto solution but OK if the drive will only be used occasionally.

Are you sure that is the same adapter you use? I question it providing enough power. Does the adapter you have use external power.
Edit: Looks like Amazon changed the product link from my order history. The one I purchased came with external power, but looks like this new product/link doesn't. So you're correct, you'll have to find one that has external power. This one looks similar to the one I got. https://a.co/d/e8W22s7

Any better valued blu-ray drive as in not lower price, but perhaps a little more cost gives a lot more value?

But then you're looking at $50 for the drive and $50 for the enclosure.
You can get an LG USB Blu-ray writer drive for $90 :

Might be cheaper / better options out there.

I'm surprised I don't hear people doing this. It can be a good way to cut the costs down.
