If HD wanted to bundle it, they would sell it as one item.
Nothing wrong with returning an item you do not need/like

Ever since I got my orbitals I rarely use the square sanders (that leave swirl marks)

I have the corded version. I wonder if it is worth it to switch......?
Also, how much time will it run with a 20V 2.0 Ah battery?

if you are only getting one sander (assuming it's for a DIY) then get a random orbital sander as it is less likely to leave swirl marks. Sheet sanders are cheaper to buy the consumable sand papers but is more likely to leave sanding marks. If you are leaning into more longer sanding usage or going into hobby (woodworking) then get both types imo

Thanks for your feedback. However, the free battery is a DeWalt DCBP520 POWERSTACK 20V Lithium-Ion 5.0Ah Battery Pack.

Quote from scottsmoke :
The price of the tool is $159.00.
Then you get a free 2AH battery. You can't buy just the tool for $65.16. Just the tool is $159 whether you take the free battery or not. You can 't walk in and buy the tool for $65.16. As this ad leaves you to believe you can. If you want thje tool only you will pay $159.
That's why the OP says "prorated" in the title and then, in the body, breaks down how much each component will be ticketed as on the receipt.

Quote from scottsmoke :
Another correction, if you price it out you will pay $119.00 for battery w/charger and $40 for the tool. Not sure why whoever put this ad together didn't use the correct #'s then you could have lead people to believe they can buy the tool only for $40 instead of leadiing them to believe it was only $65 even though they can't buy the tool only for $65 or $40.
Sorry, you lost me there. How I reconcile the breakdown of the pricing is shown at the bottom of this post in bold.

Quote from scottsmoke :

I agree that you need to pay $159. However, according to the receipt you have paid $65.16 for the tool and $93.84 for the battery. These prices are prorated on the basis upon obtaining a $159 item (tool) and a $229 item (battery) for a total of $159. Each of these items are subject to the return policy at the prorated price you paid for them.

To be very clear about the deal being linked to: if you follow the link to the Home Depot listing, you will be offered a tool with no battery or charger for $159. In the top right of the listing page, you will have the option of adding a free 5Ah POWERSTACK battery, which usual retails for $229 on its own. The total price will remain at $159 (plus tax). However, if you choose to purchase the bundle, you will be charged the prorated prices of each component: tool for $159/($159+$229) x $159 = $65.16; battery for $229/($159+$229) x $159 = $93.84, as reflected on the receipt. According to the Home Depot return policy, you have 90 days to return either (or both) components to get a refund. Therefore, your choices are as follows:
  • Keep the tool and battery, pay $159, get no refund, for a net price of $159
  • Keep the tool and return the battery, pay $159, get $93.84 refund, for a net price of $65.16
  • Return the tool and keep the battery, pay $159, gey $65.16 refund, for a net price of $93.84
  • Return the tool and battery, pay $159, get $159 refund, for a net price of $0

I have attempted to be respectful and informative in this post, and yet I am waiting for the thumbs down feedback to ensue.

There are thousands of posts about this hack over at least a decade. I think the cats out of the bag.
Yes, I'm pretty sure HD is completely aware of the 'hack', and even facilitate it, given that they mark the prorated prices on your receipt, along with the return policy.

Nice breakdown! I gave you a thumbs up. I'm starting too wonder if there are a group of trolls on here with all of the thumb downs on useful posts.

I'm not sure they are troll per se. I view it that the community seems to be split into several nuanced groups that are conflicted on posts about 'hacks'.
  • Those who understand the logistics of the 'hack' and believe that it crosses their ethical standards to accept a bundle deal and then return part of the bundle to create a selective discount. [thumbs down to 'hack' posts]
  • Those who understand the logistics of the 'hack' and believe that returning part of the bundle is a secret loophole which should not be disseminated in apprehension of the loophole being closed. [thumbs down to 'hack' posts]
  • Those who understand the logistics of the 'hack' and believe that sharing with community neither compromises their moral compass, nor does it jeopardize future deals being offered in this format. [thumbs up to 'hack' posts]
  • Those who are unclear on the logistics of the 'hack' and believe that stating a 'hacked' price is misleading. [thumbs down to 'hack' posts]
  • Those who are unclear on the logistics of the 'hack' but want to get in on the action. [thumbs up to 'hack' posts]

Quote from SlickDeWaltGuy :
In my limited experience, i can get more aggressive with the sheet sander since it doesn't rely on hook and loop/velcro to hold the sand paper on. If you apply pressure to the orbital sander while sanding, it's easy to melt the Velcro hooks and your sandpaper goes flying off (and eventually need to buy a new pad for the sander).
If you're melting your sander you might be pressing too hard.

You have the patience of a saint. Between the uninformed, deluded, morally superior and just plain argumentative on here, it's starting to feel like reddit.
And you already got a thumbs down for your trouble.

I got this, and was able to have each item as a pickup to different stores. Once my order went through I just went and cancelled the battery online and then picked up the sander at the store. I got it for just under $70 with tax.

It's funny how to they list the battery at $229 until you add it to the cart and then the price drops to $95...what a bunch of crooks!
That $229 battery price is super inflated. It probably costs them $10 to make.
