It's the same price at Amazon and Crutchfield too. This $200 price seems to be as good as it's been for this model since 2022. Best Buy is also shipping (for free) Open-Box Excellent models for $165.

Oof. This used to go down to $150. Then $180. If $200 is the lowest it gets I think it is going to lose its reputation as the best budget player. Still good, just a sizable price increase on an older tech good that used to sell for a lot less.

I think part of the problem is these players in general are becoming niche items that don't sell a lot of volume so that (on top of inflation) is likely driving the prices higher. Stores like Target, Sam's Club, and Costco don't even carry 4k Blu-ray players anymore.

Is 4k niche? I am an outlier with HT stuff but I thought there was a decent market segment there. I know ppl are buying 4k TVs. Are they buying 4k TVs and watching DVD and BluRay?

Perhaps you haven't heard of streaming? Wink I would be willing to bet the vast majority aren't buying discs and are instead watching their 4k via streaming. Those major retailers didn't stop carrying 4k BR players because they were selling well!

LOL @ 4k streaming.

Blu-ray >>>>>> "4k streaming"
4k >>>>>>>> Blu-ray

But like I said, I'm an outlier

I totally agree but do you honestly think the average Joe understands that? I explained why 4k TVs sell (orders of magnitude) better than 4k BR players. Like it or no, indicators point to 4k BR players becoming niche.

Physical media >>>>>> streaming mainly for sound.

I believe video bits rates are notably higher with physical media -- more data equates to a better image.

aside from dolby vision and analog audio outputs, is there any difference in playback quality between this and the ub820?

I picked up an open box / excellent from Best Buy and shipped to home, the last time the price dropped on this player and the 820, a little after Black Friday I believe. Unit has performed flawlessly and has been a very nice upgrade from our mid-tier Sony BluRay player.

I will note, it absolutely takes longer to power up, as well as to read the disks when initially put into the drive, but the span is in seconds not minutes, but definitely longer than our previous player, just FYI.

Yes, but modern compression is pretty incredible. The best 4k streaming content can look great: depending on the scene and what you're watching it on. I've seen reviewers watching a movie purchased via Apple store vs 4k disc - and they said there was barely a difference.

I'll personally take a 1080p Blu-ray over "4k" streaming any day; and sound is more important to me personally. Hell -- I'll even take a 15gb h265 file over what most providers call "4k streaming."

Streaming is garbage.
