Unless you have a habit of visiting sketchy sites or downloading pirated files, Windows Defender works great. It's built in to Windows and it's free. It's light on system resources and you don't have to worry about managing subscriptions.
I work in IT. Norton literally slows your PC down and is worse than Windows Defender.

None of these products will protect you from phishing.
Every year I say I'm going to get rid of Norton, and then every year there's a deal for such little money that I just cave in and re-up for another year.
I guess I'm nervous about windows defender. Will it remove scripts from downloaded files? Does it verify downloaded Exe files are virus free? Does it monitor for sketchy web addresses that a site might launch?

These are all things that I see Norton doing all the time. I have kids and a wife that may not be the savviest web surfers out there...

I can't answer your questions specifically, but I can tell you I've been using Windows Defender and it's predecessor Microsoft Security Essentials on all of my familiy's computers for around 15 years without any problems. I can't imagine ever going back to Norton.

The unsolicited internet brag "I work in IT" usually means the guy works at the help desk, where his main responsibilities are resetting passwords and asking "Did you try rebooting your computer?" fifteen times a day.

It is fairly easy to protect yourself from phishing — 1) check the email address of the sender— it will be very long and have nothing to do with the name of the site it is supposed to be from and typically has a foreign country marker (au or de etc); (2) never follow the link in the email even if you think the email is legit but sign directly into the site it is allegedly from and check your account; and ( 3j the email will likely contain grammatical and spelling errors and even if it doesn't — it will use language that sounds more like a dunning collection letter than a message from a customer service center looking out for your welfare.

Just note, I have used Norton for years. Last year I made a reminder to turn off auto renewal like 10 days before it expired. They charged me the going rate like 30 days prior to expiration, not the day it expired. I did not get any emails to remind me it was renewing or anything like that. I did get an email that I was charged which is how I knew. I was able to contact them and immediately and get a refund, but if you don't notice it right away you may be out of luck. Turning auto renew off immediately after installing is the better way to go.

Isn't there a website in England where we can get this for $5 or something?

Easy, yet people get phished all the time. I agree with you and you're 100% correct, but I would say it's also easy for someone to get phished if they're not paying attention.

Buyer beware for Norton if you own a Mac. I just spent an entire day trying to repair my mac after an un-install of Norton. Even when I used their uninstall tool, an extension was left hidden in System's Library that prevented an internet connection. No one seems to have an easy way to resolve this issue. Eventually, I had to go into Mac Safe Mode and use a few Terminal Commands to resolve the issue.

Except it's not 2006 anymore. I've been using Norton Premium or Norton 360 for the past 7 years on multiple Windows PC's and laptops (at least 5 devices on a concurrent license at any given time), and have never experienced any system slowdown from it. That's including on a relatively basic 6-year old laptop that I use as my daily driver.

Let go of spewing long-ago stigmas of a product and using them to make negative blanket stereotypes about the current iteration's performance.

that is not at all true anymore. that was true about 15+ years ago..

Whatever you do don't select auto renewal. That's where they get you with obscene pricing.

Literally in the same boat as you with the wife and kids. And like you said, every year there's a ~$20 deal and it's just so easy to pay the $20 then just paste the license keys into each computer to keep chugging along.
