phones will initially be unlocked.
they will lock to the first sim inserted.
(do not insert any sim until you understand this concept)

so, best case is to use ONLY the method below

Best Method to Unlock:

Put a inactive RP {Red Pocket} sim card (or any inactive ATT sim card {**H2O works as well} in the sim card slot.

{note:att is used because of its lenient and easy unlock policy. other sim will not be the same}

Power up your phone, connect to wifi.
Wait for the phone to activate.
Then you can go through the usual phone setup and confirm that the phone is sim locked under general -> about.

Next go to att.com/deviceunlock.
Start device unlock.
Do you have att phone number? No.
Type in your phone's IMEI (do NOT put IMEI 2, this is esim) then fill out your info on next page and submit.
You will receive one email from at&t right away to confirm your request.
Click to confirm and the second email should come soon with confirming the device is now unlocked.
At this point, take out RP sim card and put a sim card for T-Mobile or Verizon (or any of their MVNOs) in the phone.
Restart the device and it is now unlocked.

**H2O sim also works, cheaper at Target. Link to the H2O 1$ starter kit( https://www.target.com/p/h2o-wire...nk=sametab)

Two of them we have been using regularly. I think because these are old stock 13s the warranty seems to have "expired" - at least this is what others have been indicating
The same happened to me. Upon checking the imei, it was stated expired. Later after activating it with my Apple ID and my carrier, it kept saying the same thing. I reached out to Apple support (for doing what everyone was recommending on the forum) and while I was waiting in line to be helped, I checked again, and it updated by itself.

Also, last year the same issue I saw with a friend's Apple watch. She got her watch and when it was activated it was showing a warranty based on the date it was sold to Walmart instead of the date, she activated it. A few minutes later, it updated itself to the actual date when she activated. it.

The good thing is they finally fixed yours Smilie

Wait, is the warranty *supposed* to activate based on the date you activate the phone? In my case, the Apple rep based the activation on the date I purchased the iphones. I didn't think to ask about basing it on the dates I actually *activated* the phones (which was at least a week after I bought them). I guess it's not a huge deal given that it's just a week or so...

In Wauwatosa, WI? Was there an AT&T representative there? Any left?
I went to about 5 Targets (Not Wauwatosa) and they all said they haven't seen the representative in months and the employees could only sell used phones.
ugh, i didn't get a notification from this. Technically i went to Miller Park Way, and yes, they had some left on Sunday

Is that because the phone is activated by visible? Wonder whether it would work if it is activated by Verizon directly. I think it is no difference from Walmart iPhone deal last thxgiving

Man that sucks! Sorry to hear that. Any idea why they wouldn't take your Target receipt as valid proof?

I wonder if there are any other Verizon folks that can confirm that they can't request an unlock either? I'm wondering cause I'm close to selling my extra unopened iPhone to someone that has Verizon, they are not interested in doing the "unlock" trick, but I also don't want them to get screwed by Verizon months down the line.
FWIW, the phone is perfectly working on Verizon's network, its just locked to it, with what seems like forever. I spent several hours on the phone monday persuading a tier 2 tech to put in another unlock request and im waiting for a response from the fraud investigations team (who does unlocks) but i have very little hope it'll go thru.

Im not sure why they wont take my proof of purchase, they said apple needs to prove the proof of purchase and forced a 3 way call between me, verizon, and apple. To which apple went WTF? your customer can provide proof of purchase and the verizon rep said nope.

Unlocked it using h20 sim and got immediately unlocked email and showing no sim restrictions in general settings

Can I just not put any sim until I take it to my dad overseas in about a month ? Thanks to all of you for suggesting tips. Really appreciated

I think it may relate to the issue that the SN is not on the receipt so that Apple never realize the phone is sold and update their system, which creates all sorts of issues, such as warranty, unlock, etc

It seems to be like that for the two scenarios I saw (with the iPhone and the watch as well) I did not interfere or modify anything. They got updated by themselve.

That person is dealing with "crap like this" because they failed to read the numerous warnings in this thread to unlock via ATT first......

Understood, but there's also needing to contact Apple about an expired warranty. Wasn't worth it to me.

It's very easy to update the Apple warranty, takes a few minutes at most (but does require the phone call to apple, as others have said)

Anyone else who has recently had the phone blacklisted? Just wanted to check to see if this is a bigger problem or was just isolated to the few Initial cases.
