A lot of Brother printers are basically immortal when not abused. Mine (an HL2270DW) is going on a decade of on/off printing, never failing to recover even after 6 months of no printing - which is basically unheard of in the inkjet world.

1. You need to ensure the firmware version supports generic toner. I don't know which version would that be.
2. Keep the original cartridge and replace the chip when you buy a generic toner. See this [youtube.com] video for details.
What I haven't been able to confirm so far is if you need 1) and 2) above for generic toner to work. If its just 2) then it seems like a good DIY hack. The firmware version hack is a tricky one.
