I bought mine almost 6 years ago now and it still runs perfectly, even through incredibly hard use. The self-propel feature on mine is adjustable via an incremental toggle switch from a slight crawl to a nice brisk pace. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Ok...well you have your datapoint to add, and I have mine. I dont live in Texas, and I also dont mow just "1/8 of an inch". Rainfall in downstate NY is quite substantial during the growing season, and to avoid cutting off more than 1/3 of the grass' length, weekly, or even 2x-weekly cutting is required.

Charging 4x is not an issue with two batteries.

Calling these machines "trash" is still extremely hyperbolic and helps no one. No solution is perfect; my parents are elderly but still enjoy the exercise of mowing the lawn; not having to clear out seasonal gas, clean out carbs, and push around heavy machines is a boon to them, so electric is ideal for them.

I got this a few years ago from one of the Home Depot deals for like 250. I would absolutely not buy it again. It struggles hard if the grass is longer , like 5" . If there is dew on the grass might as well not attempt. I think it only came with the 7.5 amp hour battery. I have a quarter acre lot with a 2200 square foot house and 2.5 car garage and I can't do the whole thing on one battery. I mean I guess if you have a cabin with a small lot it would be fine but any bigger lot it's gonna struggle. I mean it still runs like a top, with no mechanical or electrical issue but just not enough power. I have the weed wacker and leaf blower which are both legit tho. That blower rips through the battery though

The other thing to keep in mind is that the mower is very light compared to metal deck/gas mowers. On a level yard, I dont even know if you would engage the self-propel - it is much easier to manuver than a gas mower. SP can be helpful on an incline. I'm not an 85 year old MIL so your milage may vary. Also - I think she should be congratulated on staying active - use it or lose it and with something like a mower to hold on to and steady yourtself I suppose fall risk is lower.

Not sure if others on this thread are having battery issues, but I have this mower with the 7.5amp battery and it's been great. I have about a 1/10th acre and half of it is heavily sloped (I.e. I use the self propelled function to get it up the slope). No matter the grass length (within reason…I'm not mowing it at knee height) or dampness it does it with zero problem. Uses at most 2-3 of the 5 battery indicator lights. Half the lawn is also zoysia which is much harder to cut than most other grass types. My only minor gripe is the cut quality is just okay using the mulching blade. Haven't a tried the high lift or other blade yet. This is a great deal at $600. I lucked out and got it $100 less last year due to an ace hardware PM.

Ego is laughing all the way to the bank as being a manager at home Depot I saw so many of these batteries coming back after a year or two customer service with ego was really good when they first started but they've gone way downhill now they make it like an act of God to get a replacement I would stay away from this brand until they invest in better battery technology their first cells were Sony 1850s and they were much better batteries but like all companies they went cheaper and now you can buy a larger amp hour battery with cheaper cells in it so it doesn't last as long

Interesting as I only see EGO products at Lowes, not Home Depot

I have a 450 sqft lawn. would this be an overkill?
450sqft? Like a shed sized area? Definitely overkill. You'd be better off with a non-propelled version, lighter and you won't have to deal with the "push forward/pull back" issues.

For a space that area you could honestly get away with a weedwhacker and leaf blower LMAO.

Wonder why they went with 56v instead of 80v for this beast? Just curious how it would perform compared to my non self-propelled, 80v 4ah battery Greenworks Pro?

Better said, would the difference in battery size (7.5 here vs my 4) make up for the voltage difference? Or is that apples to oranges?

I'm still happy with mine after a few years of use, but I do miss the raw power of my old gas mower, which was noticeably higher.
Probably because all their tools are interchangeable with batteries at the 56v

I had this exact one from Lowes! And for original price!

Despite having the honking massive battery (I actually got the 10 amp battery I think) I ran out of battery within 22 minutes. For a third of an acre, this is obviously not enough. I should not have to charge 3 batteries to get a third of an acre done with my thousand dollar mower.

Just buy gas. These battery-powered mowers are garbage. I bought this one to replace my Greenworks mower that lasted 15 minutes on a charge.
That seems hyperbolic. I think it depends on the load. I have a 1/4 acre on LI, and with a non-SP greenworks 80v, I can do the whole plot with just under two fully-charged 2ah batteries. I mow weekly and set the cutting height to 2 inches...Kentucky blue and ryegrass, nothing fancy.

My parents have a 1.2 acre plot on a hill, and use the a 6ah battery with an 80v kobalt SP. That makes 4 full charges to finish if it's during the growing season. I think the SP definitely affects that.

I've used gas for decades; if you don't do commercial work, I think the industry is going to go to electric for walk-behind, and then gas for anything you ride.

Home depot dropped ego like a bad habit a few years ago and sold hundreds of items at a huge discount to get rid of them just type in EGO and the search form and look through something old forms where you were getting $99 blowers with 5 amp batteries from home Depot

Here's the math: Watts-hours is what you want to know which is the measure of how much energy is stored in the battery.
Watt-hours = voltage x amp-hours
So your 80V / 4ah battery has 320 Wh of energy.
The 56V 7.5ah EGO has 420 Wh
The 5ah EGO has 280 Wh

One could argue that the 80 volt system has the potential to provide more power, but understand for the same capacity battery it will run out quicker. The 56 volts is more than enough to drive the mower system. Bottom line is the EGO battery system works. I am on year 5 of my mower along with a blower and chainsaw now and would not hesitate to recommend.

Thanks for the insight. My ego mower and separately purchased batteries have held up pretty well, but I got the early batch.

My 1st gen push mower has some issues, so I've been contemplating replacing it. Having heard your more recent experience with ego, I think I will lean towards green works via Costco with their battery guarantee.

To be fair, it's a big YMMV with this. I'm a big fan and the thing paid for itself the first season. I'm going on my third year with same 7.5Ah and mowing two lawns a week. Weekly mows under dry conditions with RWD and Hi-lift mulching blades has been adequate in the PNW. I often bag if it gets damp, long or with leaf pickup. I may overlap more but I rarely disengage drive. I don't mind taking longer for the clean air and good music over BT buds, I enjoy it a lot. I've adapted to it with reverse spin on string trimmer and using two handheld blowers at once on turbo. I actually have two of each, mower, blower and trimmer so plenty of spare battery power and maybe why I miss my old small engine repairman

Bought this last year with the 7.5amp battery (no extra) and I have to recharge it a couple times for a 1/3 acre lot with some minor downhill grade in the backyard. It does not do well with any damp grass or downhill lawn grading with the mulching blade if you plan to bag. It's actually pretty bad at bagging in general for any grass with moisture. As others mentioned, it's light and if you plan to use the self-propelled on any sort of incline, it sucks the battery pretty quick. Would recommend for a small lot with no type of grading.
