You can't sharpen carbide blades, there's not enough blade and they're not designed to slide out to compensate for the blade becoming shorter due to sharpening. There's a groove in the middle of the blade and it's fixed in position. They are double sided, so when one side gets dull, you can flip it over and use the other side. After that you just buy a new set and replace. They are extremely sharp and cut like butter. Also, because they're so hard, they stay sharp a long time. If you work with clean wood, one set will last you a while. But because they're so hard, they are also very brittle, so doing things like shaving subfloor seams is pretty sketchy. You can go through and make sure you sink every nail before shaving, but eventually you will nick one and that's $20 down the drain.

mainly use it to trim down doors that aren't closing properly due to foundation shifting. Ive used it to shave bottoms of doors if someone got thicker floors that werent clearing. sure there are a lot if other uses, but I like this, lightweight and gets the job done

There's a great jig design on YouTube for this kind of planer that makes it much more accurate. It creates a sled for it to ride in and can be used for flattening of larger surfaces.

I've been following this tool since last year. It has been this price with a free battery in the past iirc. I'm sure it'll return again. I'm waiting for a lower price to bite.

Good tool. Much better than belt sander to shave wood parts. Used it on doors, gates (bottom and sides) due to sag and expansion. Cleaner and less mess. Since I got this, stopped using my belt sander.

Decent planer. One thing to keep in mind is Ryobi planers only accept carbide blades, not steel blades. Other brands like DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Makita, accept both. Carbide blades will shatter the moment they nick anything hard, like a nail. So perfect for working on clean material like doors. Steel blades are big and bulky and soft (compared to carbide). So they won't shatter when coming in contact with nails, but will dull much faster than carbide and require resharpening after a little bit of use.

can someone touch on how the blades are "maintained". For instance, do they just get replaced or sharpened? are there special blades needed to be replaced?

Also, could I use this to take a 2x4 lumber and make it perfectly flat?

My basement is suspended, looked like at least 1" thick OSB. Got flooded last year from unusual heavy rains, sump died. Used this planer to even out, level edges, before putting down LVP. Not a fine application, but paid only $69, instead of calling in handy person.

I bought this with the two pack of 4Ah batteries. I'm then selling the batteries for $60-70. Only thing Ryobi I can make money on. I can easily make money on DeWalt. I've sold 3-4 sets of those batteries.
