It's an unlocked phone. They're an idiot.

I have the same question. cgigate or gadgetNerd or somebody more experienced with AT&T ship / (not immediately available) pick-up orders from Best Buy, what day does AT&T consider to be the first day of service?
-The day the order was created?
-The day the phone was shipped from warehouse?
-The day the phone was ready for pickup / the day the phone was delivered?
-The day the phone was activated?
-(I guess unlikely) the day the port-in was done?

I successfully ordered online today 3/2 with expected delivery date of 3/5 after going to store and denied on my application, so I am trying to figure out if cancelling when I receive the phone on 3/5 will count as cancelling within 3 days of service, or will that technically be the 4th day, or I should cancel after I receive the shipping confirmation between now and 3/4. I already got an AT&T account number FWIW. Perthis [att.com], somebody on AT&T form says they start bill you when the phone is shipped when you order directly from AT&T.

Thanks.

When BB sets up the account for ATT which is sometime around they ship/notify you for pick up.

I gave you your 666th rep point. Enjoy. Lol 😂😂😂

(Also got the phone ordered, Mar 6th est. del.)
May want to cancel before the end of 3/4 or 3/5 or right after the phone ships, since it looks like they start your service day clock as soon as the phone ships / is ready for pickup. I know I am the earlier of 3/4 and whenever FedEx picks the order.

Hi, BB person told me the same. But when I asked him to show that in the contract he said the contract period is 0 (zero) month. Also he told me that no activation fee if you activate it at store. Hope this helps.

No, I made appointment when there were 2 for pick up but was told no phone available when I got there. Appointment won't reserve the phone for you.
Same happened to me. 1-2 in stock don't even bother going to the store. First store told me other stores have plenty. I asked how many is "plenty". The worker said "they have". I drove 30 min. Guy processed my info set up ATT acct then said let me see if we have it in stock. Computer showed 2 in stock. One is on display. They think wasting people's time getting them into the store will help them get more bonuses. I won't do a deal like this again.

I tried to order online but since I need a new number, I'm directed to
a in-store "Mobile Specialist Appointment" to place the order.

I selected an appt tomorrow.

That said, I didn't go through the usual purchasing process till click the button "Complete / Place The Order".

Q:
1. Does it mean I have "RESERVED" the phone (so it's the normal procedure to buy online and pick in store)? Since there's only 1 left in that BBY store so I don't want to assume but like to confirm.
2. What's the point to pick up in store? If I select "Ship to Home", what will I lose? Seems the activation fee will be waived anyway if immediately cancel the plan?

Thanks!
1. No - reservation means diddly squat. I made a reservation for 9:30 a.m. today but when I got there the AT&T phone guy wasn't even there and I had to come back at 10:30 a.m. No phone is reserved (even it was, you forfeit it if you fail the instore authorization/credit check anyway as I did, for some reason)
2. The main advantage of picking up in store (if the phone is available for pickup right away, not ship to store) is to start the 3-day clock right away so you cancel service with AT&T right away, as it seems, per what OP said above and corroborated by someone at AT&T forum , your service starts as soon as the phone is shipped

Let me summarize my experience with this. Hopefully it helps others. I purchased one, and my dad purchased one - under two different scenarios.

Me:
  1. Went through the online order process at Best Buy last night. Entered my Metro Mobile phone number as a number to transfer. Total was $0.00.
  2. Shortly after placing the online order, ATT sent me an email to confirm my email address. This was just for confirming the address, I could not set up a password yet.
  3. Next morning, I received another email from ATT to create a password for my account. Account created successfully and logged in to see my new line of service.
  4. Picked up at a local Best Buy store. No questions asked. Just went to the store pick-up counter.
  5. Went back home, logged into ATT account, did online chat, and cancelled service.
  6. Got confirmation email that line was cancelled, and online account reflects I don't have a plan.
  7. At no point was I asked for my Metro Mobile port-out PIN.
  8. My Metro Mobile SIM card is still active and still has service.

Dad:
  1. Went through the online order process at Best Buy. Entered a Google Voice # that was NOT unlocked. For account #, we just put the same Google Voice #. Total was $0.00.
  2. Shortly after placing the online order, ATT sent me an email to confirm his email address. This was just for confirming the address, he could not set up a password yet.
  3. About 30 minutes later, he received another email from ATT to create a password for his account. Account created successfully and logged in to see his new line of service.
  4. Picked up at a local Best Buy store. No questions asked. Just went to the store pick-up counter.
  5. Went back home, logged into ATT account, did online chat, and cancelled service.
  6. Got confirmation email that line was cancelled, and online account reflects he doesn't have a plan.
  7. At no point was he asked for any port-out PIN from Google

yeah on my online ship to home order, no port-out PIN required from Google either, although I did (maybe stupidly) paid Google the $3 to unlock fee. It was a secondary or tertiary GV number of mine so no biggie, except the $3 lol. Google port out portal shows port-out approved by Google.

Read a few pages above. Phone comes unlocked regardless whether you cancel or not.

Got the phone. Cancelled the service. I never unlocked my GV number to port out. However, everything else worked. I also did not activate anything using the sim card provided.

Waiting for the notification that my plan was cancelled. How long did that take you guys?

Thanks for the sharing.

For process #1 (you) during the whole steps, does the Metro Mobile # have to be ACTIVE (since mine had expired) to receive any SMS / call to complete the setup or activation / deactivation?
