I have a gen or two behind ridgid tools. They are brushless but not rated for max batteries. Will I notice and difference with these vs the standard 4.0 I've been using?

Probably longer sustained torque which may may feel more powerful. Your batteries are probably old too so you might have underpowered tool performance
Certain tools can take advantage of Max batteries and draw additional power under load - these will have 5 contacts on their connector, rather than 3.
Aside from that, Max apparently have higher quality battery cells under the hood which may have a longer life with more charge cycles. They serve no special purpose for older or incompatible tools.
In the spirit of the Ridgid ecosystem, you're probably better off running your existing batteries into the ground and having them replaced with a newer equivalent, rather than trying to buy "better" batteries.
