I understand it to be another communication method where you won't need to go from phone to router to device. With matter your phone can communicate directly with the device bypassing your Wi-Fi. It's much faster. But obviously if you're not in range it will still be over the Internet to your router to your device.

matter is just a standardized protocol so that all matter devices can communicate with each other. matter still needs a wifi network in order to talk to other matter devices. thread is where devices use its own network independent of wifi but can still use matter to communicate with each other.

I've never heard of Tapo; is this a newcomer?
Have been using a couple of their Tapo (same as Kasa) cameras and new 1100 lumen color bulbs. Pretty good deals, software, quality
The "matter" products are pretty interesting: its a new standard / way of communicating between devices with matter, with very little use of wifi (when it can work) sending small signals just between them as bridges and should be compatible with google, Apple and other products.

Yes, I like being able to keep track of energy consumption. And there are a bunch of apps that will show you graphs of your energy usage etc when using these types of plugs.

Can the Kasa app control this? Or do we have to install the new tapo app?
Or at least can tapo app control the old tp-link kasa plugs?

I've always wanted to try something like this out. I know space heaters shouldn't be used with extension cords and power strips, but these will handle the load of my space heater. Is there any reason I shouldn't use one with these?

It's really not that much of an inconvenience to go into the room 30 mins before I want it warmer to turn on, but I'm the kind of lazy that welcomes technology in these instances!

I use with one and it's been fine

Sorry for the complete neanderthal question... if I don't have any smart home devices at the moment and typically leave all my devices plugged in (including my laptops and desktops), what are some potential high-impact, time/energy-saving uses for these smart wifi plugs? Thanks!

The washing machine upstairs is dumb.
With power monitoring plug, I use an automation to turn on a lamp and trigger Alexa to tell me the wash is done.
This way I hear and see to know I need to move the laundry so it doesn't sit and get forgotten.

I use them with a motion sensor to trigger voice and light routines (with a lamp plugged in) which is helpful at night.
I use one to turn on/off my external hard drive so it's not always running.
When I'm in virtual meeting, I trigger one to turn on the lighting so my face is lit up.
I use others to turn on cameras when I leave the home.
I use another to recycle the router when there are wifi issues.
I have more that do other things but that's an idea of some stuff.
Timers work great as well to turn things on/off when not home via away/home automations via Alexa, Hubitat, or Home Assistant.

Once you start with one or two, you'll think of ways to use them.

Recycle router? Is there an option in the app to do off and then back on after a min? If the router hung, might lost access to everything.

I have a TP-Link Kasa smart plug (KP115) on our washing machine, with power monitoring capability. The Alexa app doesn't expose any of the power monitoring features to trigger a routine, only the on/off state. Does your smart plug let you define routines triggered by power events in Alexa using the Alexa app, or are you using Home Assistant and Nabu Casa? TIA!
