Of course I liked it better when it was on sale for $48 Smilie but this is the lowest price I've seen on it for a while... it got recommendations and good reviews from various websites back in it's time for being a reliable quality ssd (2.5 form factor) drive although there's been some controversy about the newer versions of it having problems with the firmware..

... on the other hand I've purchased (thinks) .. going off memory maybe two or three of the newer (firmware wise that is) that I've been using for several months now with no problems... I've purchased .. going off memory here I think maybe nine or ten of them of various sizes (from 250 GB to 1 TB, 1 TB more often than not ) and installed them in various desktop and laptops and have not had problems with any of them.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078211KBB

if that link doesn't work you can search on amazon by the model number, CT1000MX500SSD1

some reviews from way back when the drive was first introduced I believe

I've had two of these die on me with very little use. They were both from the same batch so could have just been that batch being bad.
PC market is slowing. They had to slow production out of Taiwan b/c they had too many. The price rose because of the slowing of supply but the price is coming down still b/c of demand. People are not buying PC in droves like the were in 2020-2021. PC are considered durable and not a product that gets replaced every 3 years.
Should be $35. PC industry is getting stagnant

Maybe, i had this for my Macbook time machine backup and it failed in just 2-3 months. i got it replaced by Crucial but used the replacement in another laptop instead. using a WD Black now for time machine without issues for 1 year already. i do not trust crucial as much now.... but would still buy for the right price.
Why are you using a SSD for Time machine.
A mechanical drive is more reliable and cheaper.

ME2. Not paying more for tech because some artificial manipulation going on.
1TB should be 40 at most.

Same. Well, so far just one. Absolute minimal use, it was the 4tb version and I had it installed on a computer that I wasn't using daily. I got as far as formatting it, installing Windows on it (back up drive on a Mac) and I logged in maybe three times. Ignored the computer for about a month and suddenly it was just gone. Not only that but even if I logged in with my other OS on an NVME, my boot time was loonnnnnnng due to a time out trying to even read the disk.

I pulled the drive from my iMac which is no easy task (fortunately I hadn't replaced the tape yet and just had painter's tape holding it all together. Anyway, reinstalled on my other desktop and the computer didn't recognize it. Couldn't see it at all in Disk Management. Had a mix of not recognizing at all or just causing the computer to freeze up when I ran CrystalDiskInfo, Macrium, Acronis, etc. Crucial's own software couldn't see it.

Fortunately I was able to RMA it and get a replacement... time will tell if it performs any better. I had picked up a second one which hasn't failed yet but I haven't really done anything with it other than to check the firmware and physically install it... actually a bit paranoid to seal up the iMac and might just swap it out with a Samsung to be safe (and the recent problems with Samsung were the reason I went with Crucial in the first place... ::sigh:: ). Quality control has been crap since the pandemic, across the board.

also the mx500 models were silently changed.. internals are worse than before. paying more for less and worse internals.
We've had this discussion before when the 4TB version was posted; I've checked three of them since. Internals are fine, aside from possible premature failure problems which may or may not be widespread. The guy that said the internals went down hill bought a fake off AliE.

Controller is SM2259AB
Flash is Micron 176L(B47R) TLC 2048Gb/CE 512Gb/die

(edit) I do think the cache was reduced from initial release though, you get more from Samsung for most equivalent models on that front.

And 50 to 1 the single most failed SSD of all the Samsung's we've seen surpassing the 840 EVO's but both addressable with firmware updates. Can't really comment on any Crucial's except my 11 year old 1TB M500 that still exists as my main important data drive to this day.

dang, based on my own reading of customer reviews it seemed the crucial ssds fared worse inside imacs, but samsung prices are outrageous rn. im planning on doing a nvme & sata combo replacement for a 2019 model, but at these prices im tempted to leave the mechanical drive in it.

Bought one ,same one, for $61.49 in September for 11 year old computer.
Happy with the new speed ,start up, downloading this and that.
Need this: "EYOOLD SATA to USB 3.0 Adapter Cable for 2.5 inch HDD/SSD, Hard Drive Adapter Converter Support UASP" to clone the hard drive your replacing to 'clone' over to this ssd card.

Very easy to do. Never did this kind of computer upgrade before.

so the 870 EVO is reliable after a firmware update?

No reason they'd be any better or worse in an iMac that I'm aware of; there's plenty of airflow unless you are doing some heavy tasks. In any case, that's not why mine failed... computer wasn't on enough to push thermals. NVME is more picky, see this link. I went with a Hynix 2tb P31 Gold. https://forums.macrumors.com/thre...i.2146725/ Mine is also 2019, 27".

It seems like Samsung or Crucial are the only players if you want SATA-SSD with TLC, 2+TB, cache, etc. The issue with Samsung was firmware and I believe it's been fixed but it might also be that they just haven't started failing yet (since the fix). Odds are that my other two MX500's will not fail, it's statistically unlikely based on reviews I've seen but there are some lemons out there for whatever reason.

You can still find some older models from other companies but usually 1TB or smaller; if I caught a good deal I'd probably do that instead. Crucial's RMA process was painless and I do think these drives will fail within a few months if they fail at all, and my only hesitation to use the MX500 is because it is an iMac and a pain to access so I might save these for my desktop or an external bay. If your HDD works, you could always keep that installed for backups and use an external for other stuff. I would definitely update to an NVME if you feel comfortable doing it; I've had no issue with that and it updated from 14.1 to 14.3 fine with that installed.

thanks for info. i would've gone with the p31 myself if i had started the project earlier, but there are reports of trim issues (causing progressively slower read/writes) and/or problems with sleep mode working in the more recent versions of macos (especially with samsung branded nvmes). interestingly western digital nvmes are reported to be the most successful for intel based imacs now, so i ended up grabbing a sn570. one possible advantage of keeping the apple branded drive is in the unlikely case there's another system firmware update (which can't be installed from from a third-party drive), but macos15 will probably be the last for 2019 models anyway.

That's what you read (me too) but I'm not sure how true it is. There may have been a firmware update that fixed this at some point. When I updated to Sonoma 14.0 I still had the OE drives installed and it updated to firmware version 2019.0.0.0.0. When I updated to 14.3, I had the corrupt SSD and the Hynix p31 and my firmware did update to 2020.80.5.0 despite the third party drive being the only functional drive installed.

I did see that with Samsung NVME and the trim issues. I don't believe it applies to a SATA drive but I could be wrong as I haven't investigated. I have a WD NVME (SN810) for my Hackintosh boot drive.
