Flaking has nothing to do with the paint, Zojirushi mugs are not dishwasher-safe.

These are made in Thailand and are the best thermoses I've ever owned.

It's relatively easy to do, parts all come apart to get rink of the gunk

Dropped mine a while back and it somehow broke the vacuum.. turned it into an expensive water bottle lol. Nothing I've owned since has been quite as good, in for another.

They work well but the paint would always flake off after a couple times in the dishwasher. Not sure if they ever changed their painting process.
I've been putting these in the dishwasher for over seven years without flaking.

Cleaning that lid so that it's mold free seems like a nightmare.

Complicated to clean.
As the other commentor said, it's easy to clean. Go to the Amazon link and look at the videos. It's not the initial video but the 2nd one on the top right. You unscrew the lid and then there is a spout that pops out along with the rubberish sealant at the top - 3 pieces. Easy to clean and since it's easy, you are more likely to clean it and clean it well. You arent thinking this through.

I have one of these and it's amazing. I've only used mine for cold drinks like ice water and tea. The lid does come apart which helped me keep it clean.

My only complaint is that isn't bigger. It keeps ice longer than any cup or jug I've used.

This should be one of your main reasons to buy this. This is the only thermos I know that the lid comes apart to 3 pieces for extremely easy cleaning and maintenance.
ok fair enough. I checked out the reviews and also found this review:
I loved this cup intell I realized after only having it a month and washing it every day. Mold was growing in the lid where I could not clean. This cup needs a better way to clean it!

And there were two or three other reviews like this. I'm just saying that it looked complicated to clean. I did find the video of the person taking it apart to clean and I can see that the ring can also come off so maybe the other people weren't aware of it.

Everything else is inferior to this brand. They cannot be destroyed and I will challenge any other product (same size/Oz) to keep my beverage whether it be ice or hot at the temp in which I put it in.

The first time I went to Tokyo for work (2015ish) colleagues out there laughed at my hydroflask or whatever garbage I had and got me one of these. I still have it, and have washed it hundreds of times in the dishwasher. It's 3 pieces. I have 3 different sizes of these.

I have the same mug, but with the pacman design.

It's a great mug, and no, it's not hard to clean at all. It's actually really easy because the top comes apart as others have mentioned.

Bottom line, it's going to do a damn good job at keeping your drink cool or hot.

Those of you who have experienced flaking from the dishwasher - I do not doubt this to be an isolated case BUT science would suggest this can happen to anyone:

Reason 1: Rapid temperature changes of dissimilar materials. AKA: The heat of your dishwasher water is making the metal expand at a different rate than the coating (paint). This results in separation of X from Y (Paint from Metal)

Reason 2: Quality Control of the product and base materials. AKA: Some of their paint batches may not always be "up to snuff" of their standards. This company most likely gets paint from a supplier - all suppliers are subject variance in the batches. The same goes for the coating application process. Good and bad days.

Overall satisfactory reviews indicate a good product. I see no mention if this item does or does not contain lead.

It's a good mug, but be warned that it's not robust at all. The paint flaking is one thing, but the lid and cap part keeps breaking on me and I've bought that part several times. The heat retention failed and warranty was denied due to seeing dings via photos. I'm sure it's excellent if you take great care of it, but fair warning t's not rugged.

This is crazy. I have had a mug going 4 years. I just let the top soak in dishwasher soap water for about half a day. Take it out gently brush with whatever I get - toothbrush you name it --- wala

I work in an office setting so YMMV, but I end up pouring into a mug when I get to work because of exactly what you described, too hot for too long.
That's a good thing aye? Lol shake headshake headshake headshake head
Anyway, my tried and true-- from the pot, goes in into the mug scorching hot. Then, in the car lid gets twisted off, sip and try but usually too hot so drive drive. At parking lot after 40min drive, put cap back on.
Nice and toasty.
