This is a good, flexible, intermediate level truck. Fast enough to keep older kids and adults entertained, but can be turned down for young or inexperienced users. The transmitter has a switch to limit power to 50% / 75% / 100%. Newbies can start on a 2S battery at 50% and eventually work up to 100% on a 3S battery. Unlike some of the cheaper Amazon trucks, parts to repair it will be readily available. This would be a good way to get started in RC and eventually upgrade to a 6S vehicle when you're ready.
I have an Arrma Kraton 4S truck that I run on both 3S and 4S, and cannot imagine ever having any desire to upgrade to 6S. 4S vehicles are already preposterously, stupidly fast on all surfaces.

I'm just saying this for perspective. A 3S truck isn't like a toy for beginners or something you'd find at Walmart. This is a serious hobby-grade vehicle. The majority of people will not feel any need to even upgrade from 3S in my opinion. You have to be really into the hobby to go beyond that.
Do a solid and buy through Tower Hobbies or Horizon Hobbies directly - same company and the actual owner of the Arrma brand. It'll end up being a bit cheaper if you have their free membership or their club membership, due to points earned for a next purchase.

Definitely not too old, anybody can enjoy RC. If this is in your budget (plus another ~$100 for a battery or two, charger, some spare parts), it would be a great vehicle to get started. And if you decide you really enjoy it, there are larger, faster, more expensive vehicles to upgrade to later.
Not to be snarky, I used to be into RC when I was a teenager (nitro). Now, as an adult, I'm wondering what do you do with this after playing around for an hour? Does it continue to be exciting? How do you keep it interesting once you've ran it full speed around the yard/parking lot/etc.? I keep wanting to buy one because I finally have the money to, but I'm wondering if I'll get bored with it quickly.

As with all things in life, if you enjoy doing it you will enjoy doing it. People spend HOURS fishing without catching anything and then repeat every weekend for decades while some people would lose interest after 10mins of no bites.

RC is the same thing.

I appreciate the sentiment but I have the prime CC which gives me an additional 5% off at Amazon. This is SlickDeals after all.

Where should I buy this from? I don't need points for future purchases. Tower, horizon, or amazon. Are there free memberships that get you a discount on your first purchase ? What batteries and from where?
I like to buy from Horizon or local hobby shops. Most will have this same price during these sales. There is a full "Truck" sale going and there are other deals going. Would love to get the Super Rock, and $600 is a great deal, but it is still $600.

Build a ramp and start jumping. Going for distance, flips, etc. is a blast. This leads to broken cars and rebuilding with better parts. Then there is racing with friends or kids. A friend of mine has the Granite, and it is a wheelie monster and ridding it as long as you can is awesome. I would look online for how to reinforce the tires as they do have issues shredding unless Armma has fixed this (there are videos on how to do this). The thing is, the Granite at this price is a great way to test out if you like it.

The negative image certainly is there and it has nothing to do with you or people like you. I know two people that are complete scumbags and they are both into rc anything, helicopters, cars, etc. Both are scumbags, him and his family are on food stamps, nothing wrong with that. But there is something wrong with selling the food stamps for $.50 on the dollar so you can go buy your rc toys even if the kids starve. Not just rc toys, drugs also. THAT is how they earn the title of scumbags, not his family, but both those guys.
So yeah, unfortunately people like that bring stigma to being a grown adult and be into rc cars. So to contribute my own experience in this..... I did buy a childhood rc car for nostalgia.... quickly lost interest and felt pointless. It didn't have the same entertainment or enjoyment value it once had when I was a kid. My own kid played with it for the first time..... and on that first time wrecked it trying to jump it off a transition of dirt to asphalt street that looked like a ramp, but that day decided it was going to be a wall. Was supposed to buy parts and fix that rc car, never did.

The HBX 2997A was my favorite RC before purchasing the Big Rock. I think its great entry level vehicle. It can be purchased for less than $200.

Any recommend RC trucks for a 5 year old? Would this be overkill/dangerous?

I just purchased this for my 5 yr old but he has had an opportunity to practice on cheaper vehicles. You can throttle these down on the remote to make it safer for inexperience users. You can also use 2s batteries and work up to 3s. I would recommend the DEERC 210E as an entry level 3s car if you are looking for a starter and don't want to spend over $200.

Can you put a NiMH battery in this truck?

Yes you can, they just won't perform as well as li-po.

The down votes are uncalled for when it's a legit question for some people.

This is worth the money, no denying it. But if you are new and not sure about a $250 leap, a $100 hbx can be worth the money too.

I needed something repairable for my 7yo son who kept burning up the $50 Amazon rc cars with plastic gears. Hbx made sense. If he stays interested, I'd love to move him up to this after a year.

"Worth" is subjective.

They also have the Losi Mini T 2.0 brush on sale for $100. That would be a great starter car. Just limited to street and dirt. Can't take grass, to small.

Now is a great time to jump in. The leaps in advancement for brushless motors and lithium batteries makes electric RC amazing!

I kind of got bored but it led me into flying FPV drones. I'm planning on fixing my surface RC stuff and using them again. I didnt use them at all last year.

Ridiculous quote. I have zero interest in full size monster trucks, but bashing my 4x4 monster truck in my yard and sending it off homemade jumps is great fun.

Monster trucks are great all-around RC vehicles because you can use them almost anywhere and they are very good at taking abuse.
