Purchased it for $22 Sep last year. I'm happy with it with my extremely infrequent use (probably about 10 times in all this time). It has done just fine with the few envelopes and documents (5-8 pages at time) that I fed it.

The main thing I don't like is the fact that there's a whole mess of dangerous blades just under the top half. Be extremely careful when taking the top off to empty it or you'll likely get a finger sliced open. I feel they could have easily added a deeper plastic shroud or something around the blades.

Price seems to have jumped back up to $46 for me. GL to those who can still get it.

I don't even know where I bought mine. Had it for a long time. You do need to grease it up once a month from the manual. Veggie oil or shredder oil.

Microcut are better with tinier shreds but comparatively expensive.

I have this amazing basics microcut version & going strong for past few years—

I use amazon sheet form oil…you run the sheet like a paper once every few days.

Don't really know what's going on. I see it for the sale price but when I put it in my cart it's the regular price.

Does anyone know if this could handle cardboard? Looking for something that can shred cardboard for composting.

Probably not... just run your lawn mower over the cardboard

Is spraying a bit of WD40 or something similar not recommended?

If you cut the cardboard into comparatively narrow strips (maybe 4") it may be able to handle it. Of course, there are different types of cardboard, and some heavy duty waxed stock will kill the shredder. But your regular flimsy Amz/WM box should work as long as you are not trying to shred the full 8" width.

I've had it, for about as long (with about as much use). It actually doesn't turn on, unless the back switch is pushed in, from the basket. I found that out the hard way. So I *think* your fingers are pretty safe.

I didn't actually mean to suggest there's a risk of it turning on randomly. It seems pretty safe in that regard.

But when I opened it the first time, I grabbed it right around and under the top and just barely escaped getting a nasty cut from the stationary blade. I've been careful since but it's definitely possible to get injured if you're not aware of how it's built like I was. Another commenter mentioned almost all shredders are like this but this is actually the first time I've purchased and used one.

I use a sheet with olive oil drizzled on it every few months.
