For those of us who wanted goHardDrive's 5 year warranty on a 12TB HGST drive, the price has finally dropped to $80 matching what we saw from SPD.

Seriously, so tired of the same garbage being posted in every thread.
Just to get the rest of the nonsense out of the way :
1) Yes, it's a lot of data to potentially lose so don't be a moron and DO have a backup strategy if it's data you care about.
2) These drives potentially support PWDIS so make sure you do the 3.3v mod and tape or snip the pin if you have a drive that supports PWDIS but a PSU that doesn't. You can also use a Molex to SATA adapter, but use the crimped ones and not the molded ones since the molded ones can burn up.
3) Yes, they don't ACTUALLY refurbish the drive. Do you know how many places are equipped with a clean room to take apart drives and do actual refurbishing? I don't, but I do know that I don't want some random third party opening my HDD before they sell it to me. Slapping a sticker on it, doing a format or secure erase, and even blanking SMART is about all the refurbishing I require on an HDD. Or a PC for that matter.
4) Yes, these drives have a good number of hours on them. Yes, enterprise drive MTBF numbers are insanely high but don't necessarily guarantee a long life. Lots of hours doesn't necessarily mean a shorter lifespan either. If you can't handle that and would rather pay retail..... bye.
5) Yeo, these CAN be louder than normal drives. But honestly, the helium drives from WD have been no louder than most non-enterprise air drives I've dealt with in the past. Your enclosure, mounting strategy, closeness to the enclosure, and personal hearing ability are all variables we can't know. FWIW, I don't think these drives are "loud".
He doesn't need a hug. He just needs people to be able to post deals on these drives without someone coming in every single time and commenting that they wouldn't use a used hard drive, followed by pages of arguing on how reliable these are and how much life is left in them. And he's not alone. This gets old
The listing says that is has both a 3 year and 5 year warranty. I sent the seller a message asking for clarity. Ill post back what they say.

Do they test these drives before selling them? 2 of the 6 drives I bought were immediately bad before any extended test.

I ordered 4, 1 immediately failed surface test click of death. Currently running long surface tests on the other 3. Fingers crossed. Mine all had minimum of 34k Power on Hours

Yes, you would want a crimped (not molded) Molex adapter to "defeat" PWDIS.

Alternatively, you can tape or snip the pin with no special tools. I used a razor blade and blue painter's tape that worked for years until I snipped the pin later. Not a big deal. Google 3.3v pin mod or check this - https://www.google.com/amp/s/www...._page=true [google.com]
The link was very helpful, and I watched a video that explained it's okay to tape pins 1, 2, 3, as long as 3 is covered and 4 is not. I did that with electrical tape, and it still didn't resolve the problem. I'll be shipping my drive back. I tried with a taped pin 3, with and without the provided adapter, with molex, without molex, None of those made any difference...green screen crash each time.

That makes more sense, because a PWDIS issue shouldn't have caused some of the problems you were experiencing. I'd say it's better to know it was a bad drive.

Do you complain about refurbished computers in every thread too? Most computer refurbishers (including Dell btw), simply wipe drives and reload the OS. On their laptops they will also sometimes add a sticker to the lid. That's it.
Does it matter if everything works..... No.

Do you want someone trying to open a helium drive that's welded shut..... Hell no.

Your complaints are ridiculous and tiring.
Most of those aren't used for 5 years by a company then some third party just wiped the data and sold them as "refurbished". The Dell refurbished laptops are actually refurbished by Dell (the manufacturer). I never posted this warning in the actual Seagate or WD refurbished hard drives deals. These are USED hard drives that are used in data centers for 5 years, it's very different from typical refurbished hard drives from the manufacturers.

I'm learning the hard way why I should have done a full surface scan. I didn't want to wait an entire day so I just did a quick one and SMART was showing the drive as good. I wrote a bunch of files all verified and now the drive is exhibiting strange behavior when I took it to a USB dock to write new files. The new files have gone missing outright even though they were tested and verified. Did another quick scan and now the drive is showing 99% of it empty (capacity is "intact" though). Drive now needed a repair which brought back most of them fortunately. I just can't seem to write new files reliably from the dock even if they come out tested and verified (I use TeraCopy).

You're wrong all over the place.
Dellrefurbished.com has a ton of Intel 8xxx series machines (Desktop, AIO, and Laptop) for sale and the current Intel Gen is 14xxx. That makes all of those machines 5-6 years old.

If you've actually ever bought laptops regularly from there, you'd know that FedEx often does the "refurbishing" and Dell doesn't even touch some of the machines. While they are mostly fine, every so often issues show up that indicate not much, if any, testing is going on. They are just slapping a sticker across the entire lid of the laptop to hide blemishes and then formatting with a fresh Windows install before shipping them out.

These drives are welded shut with helium inside (much like any 12+TB drive these days), exactly what kind of refurbishing do you expect? The less the better, considering virtually no third party is qualified to open these.

Just received mine, 15k power on hours and no red flags (yet). Averages out with the (10TB) drive I got from them last time which had 48k hours lol.

Received 3 on the 18th, 2 had 39K hours and 66 power-ups and the remaining one had 41K hours with 47 power ups. All three drives passed the long (12 Hour) WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic. Two drives were one of the smoothest drives I've ever had (I have about 30 drives) and one had a slight vibration. SMART data looked good after the test.

I was pleased that these work great in DAS enclosures without the need to tape the pin. I also barely notice the drive noise when they are in the DAS sitting on my desk since the enclosure muffles the noise.

If goHardDrive is monitoring this thread, go ahead and bring this deal back (or the NewEgg one) so I can grab 3 of them.

I bought 4 new 12tb drives from BBY (albeit 4 years ago), shucked them and now 2 of them have failed in 6mos. Might as well buy refurbs and save the money.

This deal comes and goes. You'll get your wish if you wait a bit.

Unbelievable! I've been watching the item on ebay AND had the page up checking periodically, and this notification alerted me first.

Thanks!

Glad I could help. I'll be in your shoes before I know it (needing a drive), so just trying to pay it forward!
