Without fear of cannibalization they offer basic models so cheap, way cheaper than they used to, but charge a billion for some ram and storage since their pro pricing is way higher.
I think it's good, because most of the time, a m1 8gb will perform better than a similarly priced windows laptop or pc with 16GB ram.
Plus it makes MacBooks competitive. Now windows laptops are only like 100$ cheaper than m1 MacBook air
I bought a mac mini in 2012 for $499 and my wife's 2020 m1 air was $1199. Her previous 13" 2012 macbook pro was $1199 as well.
The value of being able to pull the HDD and replace it with an SSD like I did in my 2012 MBP and mini are long gone, and yes it's a bummer, even i'd admit that. But the new chips + architecture are stupid good and responsive, better than anything they had with Intel.
In 2006 dollars that $2k 2024 MacBook is $1300. So in real dollars you're paying 1/3 less.
In 2006 dollars the $700 Walmart M1 is $450. A $500 Mac Mini in 2024 is $325 in 2006 dollars.
As you can imagine there weren't a lot of options for new MacBooks at $400-500 back then, or $300-350 new Mac desktops. The inability for folks getting the entry models to upgrade into the pro priced stuff has resulted in really cheap products from Apple, particularly through their resellers where they must be selling them off pretty low to allow 3rd parties to do aggressive sales.
oh wait no need to imagine, it is the best seller 8GB config across the line up from Air to Mac mini and iMacs.
Yea that's the part that makes me laugh, like the entire world is using it just fine enjoying the performance instead whining online about something they don't necessarily understand…..because they heard someone else say it. The average user, are performing basic tasks. It's not that serious.
Can I ask what condition was it? open box - ???? (excellent, good, fair)
also does fair come without accessories like keyboard etc.,?
and can these be returned?

- box may not be original
- some accessories may be diff (ie: charger but still charges) - so far always genuine.
- machine tend to be good condition, may have some smudges to clean up but I've never seen scratches etc.
- I believe some may be floor models so may have been running so I check the screen. Some may just be stock items they want to liquidate but cannot outright lower the price but "open box" lets me get around the rule set by Apple for example on the pricing they are allowed to sell at.
I always open it at the store and check, if I don't like it I return it right away but so far so good.
I'd login to it, check screens, etc and verify specs. The employees don't care and don't mind. You may need to step to the side so they can help other customers but I'd like to check everything.

After this experience (among others), I've 100% learned my lesson with buying Macs. Either:
- Buy brand new from an authorized reseller (hopefully wait for a sale ha!)
- Buy 'factory refurbished' only from Microcenter or Apple, as you will be guaranteed an Apple-certified/sealed box with a 1-year warranty (no Woot!)
- Buy used.
It's that simple, for me at least. "Refurbished" or open box from BB, Woot, eBay and online resellers is too much of a gamble. If you really want to save money, there are plenty of people selling very nice used machines that will almost certainly share pictures/conditions ahead of purchase, so it's not some crapshoot with a faceless online retailer. After this experience (among others), I've 100% learned my lesson with buying Macs. Thank you both!

Glad I always check and so far do ok with it.
No box for something like iMac would be a non-starter. I've gotten laptops so far, a one of them had one of those "shipping" boxes with the plastic wrap stablizer. Was not original box but it at least in a safe box for shipping purposes.
I know the 3rd grade can be a challenge for people like you, but keep at it, you'll eventually get to a point where you're not eating glue all day.
I honestly don't know what's wrong with him
- The last kid on the sideline getting picked for a game
- The kind that yells to get attention and thinking he'll get friends then throws more tantrum.
We all know the type.
