Wife has one if these (nottingham) and its been okay, but it's abs and we havent trusted it for the flying we do. They have the 20" for like 49 too, but we went ahead and got the polycarbonate set on woot instead.
Brand name please?
Edit: nvm, found Olympia but Amazon has another brand polycarbonate set of 3 for $120 with good reviews.

Delta and southwest (the ones I checked) only permit up to 62 linear inches (63-80 inches incur an additional $200 charge)
Out for me.

I fly a fair amount, mostly on Alaska and Singapore and some other Asian carriers.. I get weighed almost everywhere but I've never seen them pull the tape measurer out, my largest is just at 62in too but i think it's pretty rare to check at least in my experience. Maybe if you check a chest or other odd shape luggage you'd be more likely for a gate agent to get out a tape but at least in my experience it's super rare

Wrap it in something soft, like clothes. I just don't get the hype for hard sided luggage other than easier to clean but then it also cracks and breaks...

What I really don't understand is hard luggage carry on. If you are handling your own luggage why do you need a hard luggage. the added weight makes it difficult to lift up to the bins. i had this lady ask me to help her with her hard luggage to the bin. When I lifted it, I almost injured my shoulder. I am never helping anyone with hard luggage again.
