The core is just the Elite 2 but doesn't come with the paddles or alternate sticks/Dpads. Those can now be purchased separately if you want them. The controller still supports all those accessories, just doesn't come with them.
These are fantastic for the battery life alone.

You don't need to wait, there is no requirement that the product be in stock to return said product. Their return rate on these was so high that I highly doubt they will ever restock them.

That's right. I was gonna return it and buy a new one! But they didn't have it for sale

You've gotta assume that they'll also be announcing an Elite 3 alongside it or soon afterwards. They aren't going to be able to continue to sell a "premium" controller that is missing a ton of features from the new base controller.

No future release date though so you'll be waiting...and paying more than double for what exactly?

Is the quality of the controller any better? One of my struggles with xbox controllers is that they feel cheap to me.

They're considered decent controllers. The 5 buddies I play with on Xbox say they'd rather use the Xbox controller over their PS controllers...In fact, I don't know any dual system owner who prefers PS controller over Xbox's.

Could you get more out of Scuff's $199.99 pro-gaming controller? Prolly, but diminishing returns apply here. The basic Xbox controller is, and always has been a well-regarded product by the majority of users.

Nah, not the cheapest. well for the red one.... About a year and a half ago, Verizon had the white core Elite (series 2) controller for $65. You needed a code but, the combos you could guess.

I scored one then....

Quote from organicika :
The metal paddles are missing in the core addition of this controller. So if you have the old elites, this is a perfect transition because you should already have the metal paddles.
Nah, go on Amazon, you can buy the whole set (pick your color too) for like $10-15...

That's entirely up to the person buying. If you are fully aware that a new one is very likely to be announced within weeks and won't feel buyers remorse having bought this, then go for it. But if you've ever been around any kind of gaming forums you'll know that the second the new one is announced people will be crawling out of the woodwork complaining how they JUST bought the previous controller and they had no idea a new one was coming. Doesn't hurt anyone to let them know that they might want to think twice before buying. Not to mention that the full Elite Series 2 will hit clearance prices when the new one is announced.

It or one like it will be back.

If you can't wait the Blue one is also on sale. Not as good of a deal, but still better than normal if you need it now ($93.59 with Target Circle).

Thanks OP. I still got this deal today as I picked a store that has it in stock. It will cost me $78.42 but has a Target Circle offer of $10 reward for a $70 purchase. Sweet deal.

Are the paddles and extra stuff worth it?

Yes yes yes.

The Elite 2 Controller is nice even without the paddles (manage different controller profiles, re-assign buttons, etc)*, but imo it's all those features *combined* that make the Elite 2 controller what it is. Being able to reassign some buttons to the paddles to avoid a claw grip while running and aiming in any game involving shooting was the practical quality of life improvement.

As others said though if you already have the means to get the paddles separately for cheap (some people with older models technically have spares), then this is a decent deal.

The *other* stuff like extra thumbsticks, charging case and cradle is fluff. It's nice fluff, I definitely appreciated it, but not necessary. I think I use the medium thumbsticks most the time and while I use the cradle, I would be fine dropping it to save some money on an already pricey controller (I got it for $115 in 2019).

* fwiw I use the controller primarily for PC gaming.
