Like for example, encoding a video, editing, decoding etc, anything that requires sustained heavy read and writes for prolonged periods of time (several hours), you run the risk of overheating it and in my case it will run too hot disconnect, and corrupt the entire m.2 drive. Resulting in absolute rage when all the your files in your drive gets completely nuked and will have to force initialize it for it to be usable again (even that won't work at times)
In short: Get this if you plan on playing games fast, transfer files etc. Don't get this if you plan on using it for stuff that will require heavy use that involves lots of reading writing and deleting on the drive at the same time.
Edit: also for those that think the cooling pad will be enough, it won't. You will have better luck just taking the top off and let it cool that way. It was a very poor design to have this enclosure on a fully enclosed METAL rectangular box of abomination with no ventilation in mind. Also If you buy this make sure you use usb-c to usb-c. You can use a usb-c to usb3.1 or 3.2 but you will experience random disconnects now and then which is not ideal for something that's specifically designed for fast speeds and heavy use with the portability it's supposed to be designed for.
that makes it much easier to align the thermal pad with the nvme and case. good cooling.

At this point you are making the argument that no one should ever need anything on an external drive for anything. You are after all, the one who made it sound like an external drive should be used only for specific things (to whatever you decide it SHOULD only be used for)
But hey you know, man what's the use of usb ports, usb-c ports, thunderbolt 3-4 ports.... pfft how stupid for manufacturers to include those ports, just remove them and put in an extra internal drive. Clearly you're in the wrong, since the people here have posted their varying uses for an external m.2 or nvme external, clearly you're even more wrong since my post was featured and not yours, let go of your sd pro/high post count mentality,
Accept the fact that you have no control on what people could use their external for, it's their use, they can use it for whichever way they want.
This is similar to the thunderbolt 3 and thunderbolt 4 speed and data transfer debacle.
Thunderbolt 3 speeds and thunderbolt 4 when used with stuff like external Egpus will
not see any notable difference when in comes to speed/performance, the best and most extreme ways to push those limits on those ports is not on the speed of transfers on drives but seeing how far it pushes that external gpus performance/speed and how much you get out of it
It's llike making the argument that if the highest speed car can go 300mph and the speed limit is that much, why would someone go to the trouble of setting a speed limit of 600mph When nothing on the market would ever reach that speed? It's all just marketing, the high speed and choosy words makes our little brain think higher speed go wow.
This is also the same with the newest sd cards for cameras that have the speed of 1,700mbps. Most camera's can't even use it, there are maybe one or two camera's that use it, there is no real life example use to justify that speed on normal or even a professional setting. 180mbps is that sweet spot even for professionals, but since it's 10x the speed as it's being marketed, our monkey brains want to buy something we don't really need.
Meaning, just because you have USB4, TB3 or TB4... doesn't mean you necessarily have USB 3.2 Gen 2x2.

Performance is fantastic.
Mostly used for VENTOY and backups, but I temporarily had this plugged into my steamdeck dock to expand game storage. Ran MK1 and Wreckfest from it like a champ. Never experience the overheating other have mentioned. I am using an Inland Performance Plus 2TB.

As I said previously, Its a terrible decision for this thing to be encased in metal all the while not having any ventilation, some people in the comments same as me have opted to just it on top or our desktop rigs that has exhaust fans as an attempt to cool it off under heavy use. The metal wouldn't have been a problem if the metal was meshed design instead of being a complete block of metal.

As such a 20Gb/s interface will only do ~2500MB/s, which will not even max out a pcie3 nvme drive that can do ~3500MB/s let alone a pcie4 drive that can do ~7000MB/s
