16GB might seem enough (nothing is blatantly crashing), but try 32GB, and you'll see the software you use will consume more RAM and behave snappier. Past 32GB is probably unnecessary for a regular user.

Do people get commission for complaining about "only 8GB of RAM" or acting surprised that the RAM is soldered (which sadly is the norm)?*

*The industry standard in this price point is NON-upgradable RAM. Not even worth asking 99.8% of the time unless it is a gaming, creator, or desktop replacement laptop.

Now, an adult question: where does the 'Ultra 5 125H' stack in tier compared to Intels other 73 lines of mobile processors? The Ultra series are a step up from your standard 'Core' SKU's, correct?
If by "industry standard", you mean Apple, sure.

In other news, Lenovo is making RAM upgradable again in the latest ThinkPad T14, which is not a gaming/creator/"desktop replacement" laptop. I would not be surprised if Lenovo makes more models have replaceable RAM in the near future. Of course I haven't mentioned Framework yet.

Just because many laptops have 8GB soldered RAM does not mean it is acceptable or we should live with it and not even complain about it. It is exactly comments like yours that enable manufacturers (especially Apple) think it is ok to restrict user choices or repair options. It should be acknowledged that some manufacturers are starting to do things differently, and that is what we should look forward to.

The fact it is "news" pretty much proves my statement accurate as that would NOT be the norm. But that is actually great news if true. Lets just wait a decade to see if it catches on.

Until that actually occurs though, lets just assume RAM is soldered and gravity is real.

Its "okay" because people keep buying it therefore the companies keep making it. They build laptops to produce profit not make you and me sleep better at night. Champagne tastes don't normally align with Keystone Light budgets.

At this price point I doubt that will ever be the case. Non-soldered RAM actually has a higher failure rate (sticks literally becoming dislodged), which increases warranty returns, which lowers profit. Soldered RAM at low price points (and profit margins) makes sense from a business perspective. Plus it allows for a slimmer and lighter laptop...which is the other complaint everyone seems to have.

But let me know when that ThinkPad T14 with OLED Touch screen and 16+ gb unsodered RAM is $549 or less at launch. I'll wait.

Not true. There are plenty of laptops out there using DDR5 SODIMMs. HP EliteBook 845 G9/G10, Framework Laptop 13 and 16, plus pretty much all gaming and workstation laptops.

This a the Ultra 5 series and was first introduced 6 months ago.
Just checked Intel ark [intel.com]and I'm completely confused. I though the 12th Gen was AlderLake and the 15th Gen is Metor Lake. However the 125H is indeed the MeteorLake chip which is the latest generation mobile processor that I am aware of.

So the only downside of this is soldered 8GB and not expandable memory? That's a bummer. I have a dell Lattitude with 11th gen i7 and 8GB and that thing gets sluggish after a bit.

With an OLED touch screen and comparable last gen CPU for $549? Please, show us. I'll buy two, keep one for myself and gift you one. Promise!

But yes, you can buy at BMW or a Ford F150...just not at Ford Fiesta prices. That's my point and I already explained that above.

What is it for ASUS? $10 extra worth of parts?
Not necessarily Asus's fault. I believe BestBuy is the main culprit here - they contract Asus to create these Zenbook specials (the Q-series Zenbook) and demand the lowest price point possible and the bargain spec 8gb RAM. If you were buying a Zenbook directly from Asus's webstore, you can select 16gb and 32gb models without issues.

I'd rather this laptop had 128GB non-up-gradable storage and 16GB RAM. They cut the corner where it should be left alone. What a shame.

Sorry, I should have explained I wasn't talking about a stick shift off lease 2013 model F150 with the bed removed. LOL, there is like a 30K difference in price between a new F150 and new Ford Fiesta.

(Always funny when people try poke holes in the analogy because they cannot actually discuss the topic)

Here's what you don't understand kid. I've worked at Ford Motor Inc for 38 years and for me, a brand new F150 is the price of a Fiesta. Sorry kid, should have provided a bit more context.
